Advice on casing

Hi. I have some cakes in my terrarium, B+ and EQ. Got 3 shrooms from the EQ, but nothing from the B+. It's been a month since i birthed them. They looked kinda dry, but developed lots of mycelium in the terrarium. Temperature ranged from 55 to 62F and RH 95-98%. I recently raised temp to 65-75F, and RH dropped to 90%. I have placed the cakes directly on the perlite layer to rehidrate them, but no change so far. Should i case them? how? Thanks and enjoy it

Are you fanning out the build up of co2? Sounds like the temp might have been the problem. I have some cased B+ and the room I had them in was to cold so I bought a floor heater and faced it away not to dry it. It's been about 3weeks since I first put casing on top and still noshowjones. So I figured it was the temp, that might be your prob.

That's what i thought, so i've got a heater in front of the terrarium, and a little higher temp, but RH dropped to 80-85%. I heard that since cased cakes have more moisture, 95% RH is no longer needed. Is that true? Thanks

Ya, as long as the casing doesn't pull away from the sides and look brown, then I figure you should be alright, the reason is that the mycelium has already absorb all the moisture from the casing and shouldn't need to much outside humidity(exchange air and moisten air and the right temp is the secret. The better the temp the better the moisture inside.

So, as I understand, if I have to choose between temp and RH, you recommend to go for a higher temp even if it lowers the RH? Cause when i raise it to 70-74 F, humidity decreases to 82-87 %. Is that right? Another question. When you say "air exchanges", are you talking about fanning the terrarium and letting the CO2 out of it? Thanks

If you haven't already cased them go ahead and do so because your best bet is to crumble up the cakes and spread a layer of moisten vermiculite (plain) over them. Start the hydration process all over again. You don't want to go to tricky since they were exposed to outside air for a while. If that doesn't do the trick them we need to go with something new. Good luck

Ok, i cased those cakes using plain moist vermiculite, and covered the trays with saran wrap. How long should i wait before moving then into the terrarium?and then how long before start seeing some pinning?should i keep then in a dark place? Thanks guys, you're beeing very helpful

Wait until the casing is covered in white, if its bald in spots then use the scratch method to get a uniform white then start putting light on it.

>Wait until the casing is covered in white,< wouldn't this be overlay? you do not want to wait until the casing is covered in "white". birth the casing when it's 30% or so colonized by mycelium, if not the casings purpose would be eliminated.
