I clench my jaw or hold my breath when I'm deep in thought....
    #4848162 -

and I've done this my whole life. It's weird cuz I'll all of the sudden notice my jaw feeling sore and me being out of breath but I was so concerned with my thought that I don't even sense reality.

It doesn't feel very good. Anyone else have this problem?

it's a nervous tick perhaps?

When I meditate without a mantra or try to sleep still trippin on acid I  find myself clenching my jaw untill some part of my brain reminds me of what the fuck im doing and i should stop.

I chew gum while i meditate, not chew it rather but just wedge it between my teeth so my teeth don't chatter. or i'll put my tounge between my back teeth because I sure as fuck don't want to clench down on that

I don't think it's a nervouse twitch but more like Micheal Jordan sticking his tongue out everytime he gets in the zone and does something bad ass....

i clench or hold breathe when i'm deeply submerged into my mind...and dont' even realize i'm clenching or holding breathe until my jaw hurts or i start gasping for air.

I think I can help you.

Do breathing meditation frequently.... which means sit down, don't move at all for 10 minutes or so, and consciously breathe and pay attention to the breath.

Eventually I think this will train you to breathe consciously while thinking and in deeper states of relaxation. .... I have very once in a while noticed that I'm not breathing and even out of breath when relaxing, usually falling asleep or something..... moreso than deep thinking... but yeah.... this really should help you.

After a while when you practice you'll get really relaxed, and you'll be thinking about things, and you'll be breathing at the same time, and it will probably rewire YOU so that you can think deeply without stopping breathing.

Yeah i got the same problem. I continously clench my jaw, and when im tripping hard i "forget to breathe".

The breathing problems source is of fear. by realizing your doing it, your keeping yourself from going really deep into thought. The only way i have overcome the breathing part is realizing that theirs no way i can conciously suffocate myself, that even if i hold my breath for a really long time, eventually i will involuntarily breathe. With that knowledge i can let go of worry that im going to pass out cause i forget to breathe. So it really doesnt matter if you hold your breath or not.

the jaw clenching i think is a similar mechanism to chewing gum. WHen you do so a chemical is realeased into your brain that stimulates it into thinking. Perhaps in order to think deeply your brain needs that chemical, so jaw clenching ensues. I have to conciously tell myself to unclench my jaw. Perhaps you should try chewing gum more often so your not continually clenching.

i do not worry that i will pass out. i simply realize i'm gasping for air all of a sudden and have to catch my breathe....which interupts he thought.

chewing gum probably would help. i should have thought of that....i'm not much of a gum eater though..and chewing gum all day doesn't sound fun.

well, not all day, just when your trying to think deeply. otherwise it just takes self control. Its like any bad habit, you just got to reprogramm yourself to not clench through constantly preventing it.

about the breath thing, its because you feel the need to control your lungs, hence you hold your breath. Its all a part of letting go. If you completely relax your lungs and not concentrate on em they breathe on their own.

This is a little test i do to see whether im still trying to control my breathing. Do paradiddles with your pointer fingers, thats RLRR LRLL over and over, gently changing tempo. If you breathe in time with your paradiddles then your trying to control your breathing, if you can breathe out of tempo then your fine and posses the ability to completely concetrate on something without concentrating or controlling your breathing.

I find that if i break the flow of my paradiddles when im checking to see if im breathing in time, then that also means that im concentrating too much on breathing.

If that doesnt help, i reccommend a hefty dose of shrooms or DMT. They will teach you to let go.

No the problem is I'm not consciously trying to hold my breathe or to breathe. But after realizing I stopped breathing I have to break thought to consciously breathe again.

that's pretty cool. i've always had problems with figuring out how to stop consciously breathing though, like if you're just sitting down and you start consciously breathing, and you're being passive, and you're thinking "how do i stop noticing?"

i don't care about such things any more, but when i was younger it was rather daunting to contemplate.

meditation will help you, nowadays my deepness flucuates with my breathing .... like i go in a long long string of dream like thoughts while falling asleep for example, then when they end I just automatically, but at the same time consciously take a breath, and maybe i hadn't been breathing for 15-20 seconds but it's okay, because I let myself relax... it's hard to explain.

try conscious breath awareness for a while... even just when you go to bed just breathe into your navel for 15-20 minutes while trying to fall asleep. It should help.

well the new aged proverb goes "society teaches you to breathe shallowly into your chest but...."

and I don't know if that's true, I don't remember being taught how to breathe....

but basically if you lie on your back, when you breathe your stomach should move up and down... if you put a book on your stomach you should be raising/lowering it.

that's how you want to breathe.

I have this issue also , to test, locate the slight depression under your ears ( feel its there on both sides, press firmly on both sides, and open and close your jaw, if this is extreamly painful, then go to a doctor, I have this condition also -Tranceharper
