Canada's flat tax system
    #4832283 -

Maybe someone can tell me if the rip-off capitalist system is a Jewish conspiracy or if critiques of the rip-off capitalist system are part of the Jew run media.

Surely one or two of you know...

Let's get back to social democracy vs. capitalism, drug law and theories behind it, and, of course, "is it imperialism or is it spreading democracy".

This 'white power' stuff just makes me ill. How 'bout you?

Canadians at all income levels — whether $10,000, $100,000 or $1,000,000 — pay between 30 and 35 percent of their incomes in tax. Canadians already have a flat tax system.

I'd say good for you guys, except that 30-35% sounds like a lot. I think a 15-20% flat tax would be much more suitable, except of course then you couldn't afford all your precious social programs.

Yeah.

I bet if wealth was taxed, rather than income, the flat tax rate would be more like .5%-1%. Anyone have figures on this?

Most tax money goes to pay intrest on public debt anyways. Debt which could be avoided in the public would just create it's own money supply.

But as it is, a measure of social stability provided by a slightly higher tax rate is a good buy, IMO.

That about sums it up.

I wouldn't be opposed to a higher tax rate if they only learned how to tax more intelligently.  It's not how much you tax, but rather what you tax.  The power to tax is the power to destroy.  So it's best to tax bads, not goods.  Don't tax labor.  Labor is good.  We like having labor contribute to our economy.  Tax pollution instead.  Don't tax essential commodities like food.  Tax harmful commodities, like oil.  Don't tax capital.  Tax land rents.

To the extent that income tax exists, a flat tax is preferable because it simplifies the tax code.  A tax should have as few loopholes or complications as possible.  However, as I said, taxing a positive thing like income or wages will inevitably hurt the economy.  Nations lose millions(often billions) every year from deadweight taxation.  I reccomend The Losses of Nations by Fred Harrison, which helps explain this problem quite well, as well as explaining the proper solution.

Ms McQuaig's assertion that Canadians at all income levels pay between 30 and 35% of their incomes in tax is incorrect on two levels -- the variance is wider than that and the rate is MUCH higher than that.

She gives no references to support her assertion, and it is demonstrably incorrect. Google "tax freedom day" "Canada" to investigate the true average rate.

Quote:
Federal tax rates for 2005 are:
16% on the first $35,595 of taxable income;
22% on the next $35,595 of taxable income;
26% on the next $44,549 of taxable income; and
29% of taxable income over $115,739.

There is also an additional 6-15% of Provincial tax added on to the various brackets. The percentages are different for each province, but all the data is available at the link below.

For instance if you live in Ontario and make over $115,739 this year then you will pay about 40% income tax on it including provincial taxes.

And as I'm sure Phred would point out, if I didn't, the taxation doesn't end there as we also pay a fair bit of sales tax (between 8-15% I think depending on province).

Lets not forget all those lovely little hidden taxes.
Like the ones on Alcohol, Tobacco, Gasoline, Home heating fuel, Electricity, etc etc.
You know all the things we get double taxed on!

Our local newspaper today said the Liberals are planning on a lot of tax-cuts and will base their next campaign around the topic of cutting taxes.

Of course that means cutting funding to various programs. We'll have to see what appeasement they have planned this time around :smirk:

If the Liberals are cutting taxes.
You can bet were about to get shafted... again!
The only way we could be worse off, is if it was a Conservative Government.
Then we would really be screwed. At least the Liberal kiss us first!

It's not like you guys have a serious lack of services to begin with. I think it'd do you guys some good to learn a little more self-reliance.

We Americans rely much less on government programs than you Canadians. I'd say we're much more used to holding our own.

That coming from an American? (no offense to the rest of you)

Yeah because I enjoy making my own casts when I break a leg. And that surgery I performed in my kitchen is healing up nicely already!

The USA has, I'm sure, all the same services as citizens in Canada do - with the only difference being that more of yours are privatized while more of ours are public.

Thats true... you pay less tax, get less service. over 70% of your population lives in poverty.
A US slum makes our slum areas look like resorts
And you have to put up with extreme Government interferance in all of your lives.
eg... the infamous Patriot Act!

All in all... I think I'd rather pay the higher taxes!
But to each his own

As I said above, you still rely on a program from someone. Americans choose a health provider, Canadians chose their government. Is being able to chose which company you give your money to what you define as "holding your own"?

Trendal, stay on topic please. Again no one was comparing U.S to Canada. Paradigm was speaking about reducing programs and becoming more self reliant not bashing U.S healthcare. If you can't stay on topic then maybe a 1-day ban is in order. This is your only warning.
