    #368130 - 08/07/01 12:36 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

For those of you that thought or do think Bush's plan to return the surplus to the tax payers is stupid, will you be returning YOUR check back to the government? If not, WHY? If you are WHY?

Relax, Relax, Relax.....it's just a little pin prick * there'll be no more AARRGGHHH!!!! but you may feel a little sick.....

I really don't like George Dubya Bush. Look at how he benefited Texas when he was their governor! He cut taxes and got popular gy giving away a lot of junk. Now Texas is struggeling to balance their budget!

And Invertigo, don't you remember that is was that democrat Lieberman that came up with the $300 check! It's a democrat check, not a republican one. The only reason the republicans reluctantly went along with the $300 checks was to get ANY bipartisan support for the republican's givaway to the rich budget and tax plans.

****He cut taxes and got popular gy giving away a lot of junk. Now Texas is struggeling to balance their budget!****

First off this isn't Texas....and with a projected surplus for 2002 of 500 Billion dollars i fail to see your point. A surplus means I and YOU overpaid taxes.

****don't you remember that is was that democrat Lieberman that came up with the $300 check****

you are right (after seeing the link below) but like i state, "why did the liberals oppose it?

****It's a democrat check, not a republican one****

NO..it's MY check..it isn't a gift it's what they OWE me...and it was sponsered by bush....liebermann is a friggin dork i still don't see how he could have anything to do with it....i still think it was put into reality by Bush.

****The only reason the republicans reluctantly went along with the $300 checks was to get ANY bipartisan support for the republican's givaway to the rich ****

What are you talking about?..the Liberals wanted to give the amercans from nothing to alot less than the Consevatives wanted. As far as giving tax breaks to the rich..they pay the most taxes...people at or under the poverty line don't pay income tax or very little...I'll enjoy my $600. I guarentee i pay more taxes then anyone in the lower pay class to the middle class. So why should they get the same amount?

I'm assuming from the silence to answer the question first stated there are a lot of hypocrites on the shroomery(not you rail_gun) who stated that this cut will ruin the US.

Relax, Relax, Relax.....it's just a little pin prick * there'll be no more AARRGGHHH!!!! but you may feel a little sick.....

"NO..it's MY check..it isn't a gift it's what they OWE me."

Actually, come April 2002, you'll find that you owe it back. From what I've read, this wasn't a tax cut. It was a loan on your current taxes. Bush fooled almost everyone into believing it's a tax cut when it isn't.

Anyway, the money all belongs to the government. That's why dollars are printed by the government, that's why notes say 'US Federal Reserve' on it. That's why it's signed by the secretary of the treasury. A piece of paper in your pocket is not money. The gold in Fort Knox is money. The US government can devalue the paper in your pocket tomorrow if they like. The cash in your bank account is comprised of IOUs - it's not money. It's a promisory note, and the value of that note can be changed at will by the people who run the government.

****Actually, come April 2002, you'll find that you owe it back. From what I've read, this wasn't a tax cut****

I've heard this many times, however the letter that is sent to you before you receive your check states that this check does NOT have to be claimed on your income tax. But if you are correct then i agree it's a very dirty trick...but i still believe you are mistaken.

****Anyway, the money all belongs to the government****

Since they make the money you are correct. In a civilized US society the money earned through work belongs to that tax payer........as far as the gold in fort knox i believe we aren't on a gold standard so that doesn't affect the value of money.

still i would like to see those that oppose the tax cut because it will hurt the united states answer the original question

Yes, this is in fact Senator Lieberman's plan:

http://www.cbsnews.com/now/story/0,1597,281451-412,00.shtml

And from my understanding, this is an advance on next year's tax return. So if you typically get money back, expect your refund to be smaller next year. If you typically owe, better hold on to that $300 because you're gonna have to give it back! The funny thing is, when people get hit with this next April, who do you think they're going to be blaming for this tax "lie"?

Separate from the "rebate" is an overall reduction in tax rates. I think opposition was to the cuts being too large.

How Bush Would Change Tax Code
Income tax rates under George W. Bush's plan:
SINGLE FILERS
10% $0-$6,000
15% $6,000-$25,750
25% $25,750-$130,250.
33% Over $130,250.
JOINT FILERS
10% $0-$12,000
15% $12,000-$43,050
25% $43,050-$158,550.
33% Over $158,550

Income tax rates under the current Internal Revenue Service system for 1999 returns:

SINGLE FILERS
15% $0 to $25,750.
28% $25,750 to $62,450.
31% $62,450 to $130,250.
36% $130,250 to $283,150.
39.6% Over $283,150.
JOINT FILERS
15% $0 to $43,050.
28% $43,050 to $104,050.
31% $104,050 to $158,550.
36% $158,550 to $283,150.
39.6% Over $283,150.

Notice how there is no tax cut for the 15% (hard working people usually having menial jobs for minimum wage, those that could really use a tax break the most) tax bracket. Also notice how the highest tax rates(those who can afford to pay the most) get the greatest percentage off. Food for thought.

Invertigo, why would liberals or anyone oppose this scheme? Because it is a blatent givaway to the rich! Why anyone that knows the story and has seen these numbers can even wonder about why there was any opposition to the this GOP tax break for the rich is probably because they want to increase support for it among the ignorant masses.

This just makes my blood boil.

When you get your check remember that it was the democrats that bulldoged this through the legislature. The republicans tried several times to kill it in commitees and on the floor of the house and senate. The republicans didn't want us to get $300 per person because they care about only the rich and the rich will be getting multimillion dollar tax breaks, so why should they care about a measly $300? Well some of us do!

It is one of our basic principles in America that we have a progressive tax system. That means that those that can afford to pay more should and do pay more.

It's my understanding that the reasoning behind the 'tax refund'/'economic stimulous' checks was to stimulate our slowing economy. Now if this is the case it makes sense to give checks of the same size to all Americans (including those that don't pay taxes) because the poor and those with lower incomes spend a higher proportion of their incomes that the rich and thus the money going to them would more likely to actualy be spent, effectivly stimulating the economy.

Now isn't it ironic that in the 06-08-2001 Akron Beacon Journal that I read that Pres. G. W. Bush takes credit for the $300 - $600 refunds the dems bulldoged through the legislature. He calls it,"... the first success of a new era."

The money you pay in taxes are not your money. Once you pay it is the Treasury Department's money. You and I may not like being forced to pay taxes, but it is the price of our civalization. If you want to find out the IRS's position on if it's your money write them a letter and ask for the return of all of your money they've paid them over the years.

People making $0-$6000 get a 5% tax cut? These are high school kids working at McDonalds... The working poor, $6000 to $25,750 get no tax cut, and of course the wealthy get the biggest pieces of the pie (gluttons).

It's the same old Republican trickle down plan they've been pushing for years. The fact that it never works doesn't seem to stop them from trying it every chance they get. This time they've just modified it a tad so that adolescent kids of rich parents get some $$ too.

As usual, the folks who really keep the economy going are ignored. One of these days, if there's a big enough crash on Wall Street, maybe they'll realise that the rich don't add money into the economy - they take it out.

Funny thing about that. The kids of the rich or anyone else will be getting no refund check what so ever. There's a little known republican add on to the 'tax refund' check thing which disqualifies anyone that has been claimed as a dependant by another party from being eligable for the tax check regardless of the money they earned. So no kids will be getting a 'tax rebate' check. They will however be paying less in federal tax and have less withheld from their paychecks. If the purpose of the 'rebate' checks is to stimulate the slowing economy it's illogical not to issue checks to kids that have jobs because kids are probably the demographic that spends their money most frivolously and thus stimulating the economy.

Basically the 'economic stimulus' idea was a clever ruse to justify and get support from the ignorant masses for the republican trickle down tax scheme benefiting the wealthiest Americans. The lower middle class and the poor get no break. All they get is the the shaft, yet again.

What does someones personal aptitude or ability to work in in a highly skilled job have to do with what someone deserves? I find it to be a wee bit of a stretch to come to the conclusion that the working poor don't deserve a cent back and that the rich deserve to have much more returned to them because their human worth is greater. There are a lot of people that are fine individualsthat are rich and there are a lot of poor individuals and I think they should both be rewarded to some extent, even if not the same extent.

Yes, the wealthy do pay the most in taxes. They have their money and lots of it. I don't believe I've ever heard of 'the famous you're rich you're fucked theoy. I always thought that it would be nice to be rich because you can have so much more stuff and really live it up.

In reply to:

Perhaps there is a bit of class envy in it. But the progressive income tax system is a basic principle of our income tax system. In 1917 and 1918 the income tax first became a major source federal revinue. And except for a few years during the depression it has remained the main source of federal revinue. It was decided at the inception of the income tax that for the sake of fairness that those that could afford to pay more would.

In reply to:

why should they pay more taxes percentage wise? I'm sensing your bitter towards people that are more successful that yourself. That's too bad...I want people to prosper financially especially those people in the 15% bracket..but then they will be the evil ones.

They (those with higher incomes than the people with lower incomes) should pay a greater percentage of their income in taxes because they can afford to and it won't hurt them. Why do you think that they shouldn't? I don't resent the rich or people more sucessful than me at all. I'm famaliar with class envy. The poor assume things about the rich that are not necessarily true, and the rich look down on and despise the poor. I assure you that I hold no such grudge against anyone. Do you? I want people to prosper, even those in the 15% tax bracket. How do you think it's fare for the people with the highest incomes to get a 6.6% rate cut on their income tax and those with incomes of $6,000-$25,750 get no rate cut at all on their income tax. I would like to see everyone prosper and do well. Not just those in the higher income tax brackets.

You missed the whole point about the purpose of the 'tax rebate/economic stimulus' checks. If the purpose is to stimulate the economy then it makes sense to get money to those that will spend it and thus stimulate the economy. Individuals with lower incomes than those with higher incomes spend a higher proportion of their income on the necessities of life and spend a higher proportion of their income. The poor welfare moms and crack whores and everyone else that is poor are more likely to spend money they get and thereby stimulate the economy. But the rebate check isn't really intended to stimulate the economy. It is intended to create support for the tax givaway to those in the highest tax brackets. For that reason were the young (those claimed as dependants by their parents) excluded from the rebate program and for that reason checks were not issued to the destitute to stimulate the economy.

In reply to:

***because the poor and those with lower incomes spend a higher proportion of their incomes that the rich ****

The rich earned it..are you saying they don't deserve their money back?

It's not my place to say what anyone deserves. I do my best to withhold judgment on what people deserve. But I think they are no more deserving of a break than anyone else. Why can't everyone get a break?

In reply to:

****The money you pay in taxes are not your money****

Oliver Wendell Holmes described taxes as "what we pay for civalized society." That's true. It's the price we pay for living in America or anyother country which levies taxes. Once you pay your money to the revinuers it is the revinuers money. The federal goverment may represent you but you do not own it and it is not yours.

In reply to:

I think you missed the purpose of the tax break and rebate checks. The pretext behind them was to stimulate the economy. Not to reward those in higher tax brackets for their hard work and education.

BTW, I will be getting a check for $300 from the revinuers, to answer your first question.

****Do you think they work less hard than people in other earning brackets? ****

Who said anything about working less?...i said that they aren't the only brackett that are the "working people" I work my ass off to make the money i do.....you're assuming i meant other and you know what they say when you assume

****What do you mean by that? Underachieveing at what? *****

you know exactly what I mean by underacheivers....a large number of those in the 15% percentile want the money but aren't willing to do what it takes to get it. Denying that would be perposterous.

****By ignorant masses, do you mean everyone who doesn't agree with you? ****

Is this your only defense? I meant what i meant and if you can't accept that it's really too bad

Relax, Relax, Relax.....it's just a little pin prick * there'll be no more AARRGGHHH!!!! but you may feel a little sick.....

"I work my ass off to make the money i do....."

So does every hardworking person. Working your ass off is no defence of inequities in compensation. There are only so many hours in the day, and a human being can only work so hard.

"a large number of those in the 15% percentile want the money but aren't willing to do what it takes to get it. Denying that would be perposterous."

Again, the same flawed logic. To deny that there are many more hardworking people in that wage bracket than there are slackers is simply blind illogic. If that wage bracket (likely the one where most workers in this country fall into) was composed of even 40% slackers, business would grind to a halt. Unfortunately your attitude pervades a large proportion of the middle class. I look forward to the day when the hardworking poor do indeed realise their predicament and put down their tools. That's the day when your attitude will be proven wrong. It won't be a happy day for the wealthy or those of you who think you work harder than everyone else.

As one who has worked 16 hours a day, working hard both physically and mentally, and fully committed to an organization that paid me $3.00 per hour, I can honestly say that your attitude really makes me sick.

****What does someones personal aptitude or ability to work in in a highly skilled job have to do with what someone deserves? ****

It's called income.

****working poor don't deserve a cent back and that the rich deserve****

noone said they don't deserve a break...but if you pay no taxes (or very little) you should receive no break or very little.

****much more returned to them because their human worth is greater****

I knew you would resort to this however "HUMAN worth" has nothing to do with it (read my previous posts) Financial worth is what i'm reffering too...i too was in the 15% brackett but i lived within my means.

****I don't believe I've ever heard of 'the famous you're rich you're fucked theoy****

it means you make a lot of money now your greedy, a glutton and piss on the poor therefore you should never get a break on taxes

****I don't speak for the ignorant masses so I'm not going to touch that comment****

if you believe that then you do..do you?

****Perhaps there is a bit of class envy in it. But the progressive income tax system is a basic principle of our income tax system****

I'm glad you have admitted having class envy. I knew it anyway but many deny it. Therfore now i see where your mind is and your beliefs are tainted with a hateful envy....one of the 7 deadly sins....i prefer a flat tax or cunsumption tax myself....but you're correct we are stuck with what we have.

****I don't resent the rich or people more sucessful than me at all. I'm famaliar with class envy****

contradiction of your previous comment?

****and the rich look down on and despise the poor****

i'm sure their are some cases but that's a broad statement....what is rich in your eyes then....and remember there are a lot of rich and succesfull people that started out in the 15% bracket..Bill gates?...but a majority of those in the 15% bracket have never been rich.

****It's not my place to say what anyone deserves. I do my best to withhold judgment on what people deserve. But I think they are no more deserving of a break than anyone else. Why can't everyone get a break? ****

then why comment? Are you a moderate? I think they are deserving of more of a break since they but in more money...boken record?

****Individuals with lower incomes than those with higher incomes spend a higher proportion of their income on the necessities of life and spend a higher proportion of their income****

This has got to be one of the most rediculus stements i have ever heard..first off the economy isn't stimulated merely on neccesities rather anything that is sold. I guarentee you that i spend more on neccessities than anyone in the 15% bracket...in addition i buy cars, home improvements, stocks, entertainment and travel. Therefore i give the economy a bigger shot then those that spend less...and that's ok because you have to live within your means. Not every poor person deserves 2 cars, Big screen TV, VCR, and a house overlooking the ocean.

****The federal goverment may represent you but you do not own it and it is not yours.*****

sigh......this is saddening..yes, it belongs to the people of the US..the government isn't a seperate entity....though at times i wonder.

***I think you missed the purpose of the tax break and rebate checks. The pretext behind them was to stimulate the economy. Not to reward those in higher tax brackets for their hard work and education.****

actually i do know the purpose and the topic has switched to tax breaks.....

Relax, Relax, Relax.....it's just a little pin prick * there'll be no more AARRGGHHH!!!! but you may feel a little sick.....
