new rule proposal- the shenanigans rule
    #4798916 -

occasionally, in the heat of an argument, a poster will cite a point of fact or relate a personal experience that does not ring true... in some instances posters will pull facts right out of their asses, in order to facilitate their arguments...

with this in mind, i propose a system by which any member can dispute a given post by calling 'shenanigans'

proposed text of
THE SHENANIGANS RULE:
Within the Community forums, any member can dispute the factuality of any assertion of fact by calling 'shenanigans'. If the declaration of shenanigans is not seconded by another member, the declaration dies there and a finding of 'no shenanigans' is entered, and the disputed post is considered factual. If the declaration of shenanigans is seconded by another member, the member who originally declared shenanigans must create a poll with three options: 'shenanigans', 'no shenanigans', plus a STAL option for people who wish to abstain from the vote... if after a period of 24 hours, a two-thirds majority of members have voted 'shenanigans', then a finding of 'shenanigans' is entered and the perpetrator of the shenanigans is given a 24 hour ban from the forum in question.
If there is not a two-thirds majority vote for 'shenanigans', then a finding of 'no shenanigans' is entered, and the disputed fact may not be disputed again.

end of proposed text

this will give us a reasonable way to seperate the bullshit from real discussion, based upon the jury system...

That is honestly one of the best ideas I have ever seen since I have been on this site.

+5 just for the idea alone.

It would seem to me to be both inane, and illogical to propose a "vote" to determine what is true.

the american jury system has used this method to determine matters of fact for over 200 years... it may not be perfect, but its better than having people throw opposing arguments back and forth at each other into perpetuity...

Based (supposedly) upon evidence. What sort of reliable evidence could possibly be asked to be presented to substantiate someone's own personal experience, as an anonymous user, on an internet website?

Plus, I wouldn't exactly use U.S. justice system any sort of a model for success anyhow, but rather is a splendid example of failure.

IMHO, good thinking, but your proposed "shenanigans" system would probably fail in accomplishing what it set out to do at best, and at worst could become a tool for abusive cliques to censor unpopular opinions and beliefs by vote.

Theres a test run of the shenigans system going on right now, concerning magicalMystery's claims of getting accepted into med school... this vote will be nonbinding, since the admins have yet to sign off on this, but it will give everyone an idea of how this proposal would be put into effect...

Might slow threads down quite a bit if you have to wait 24 hours for a decision every other post.

THE SHENANIGANS RULE:

Will this apply in the S&M forum too?

[Dip crosses fingers in hope]

--------------------
Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

I support it. But 98% of what is said in OTD is bullshit anyway, so who cares?
