Inconsistent application of forum rules
    #1498103 - 04/27/03 04:31 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Feedback:

I have noticed that the application of forum rules on fully moderated forums seems to be lacking. I have made posts that do not violate any of the published forum rules and have had them disappear into the void. I have seen posts that clearly violate the published forum rules get approved. Can somebody in power please explain why this is?

Additional Feedback:

It would be really nice to get a PM or something similiar when a post is not approved. Even if this were an automatic thing so that we could try to rework our post so that we aren't breaking the rules or upsetting a moderator. I realize that most moderators are overworked and asking them to send out a PM for every unapproved post is a bit much, but it really sucks waiting and waiting and waiting only to realize that the post was tossed.

It would be nice to know who trashed a post, but again I see why that will probalby never be. There would be no issue with the more mature members of our communitiy, but they seem to make up a minority of people on the site.

Thank you for the reply. I didn't want this to be an ODD issue, but rather a moderation issue in general.

I usually send PMs out when i do stuff, like not approve a post and make suggestions or tell the user where i moved his post etc...

It's rather time consuming and hard to keep up doing it all the time.

Although i don't recall ever approving or not approving your posts.

I like the automatic reply idea alot. It would be nice if we had the option to click a button and send a PM to the user stating their post was disaproved. I have no knowlege of the tech. side of the shroomery so I don't know how hard it would be to implament such a feature. When we first went to full mod. in ODD I tried to pm every user I didn't approve. This takes alot of time and I found after awhile it just takes to much time.
As I said in my pm I have no problems with your posts. I know when I see your name to be approved it will be a top notch mature post.

I agree with Chinacat when i see your name on a post it's usually a good one! I also think it would be great to have an auto response. I know there is no way I have the time to PM someone every time i take some action even thought I think it's the right thing to do.

As far as "Inconsistent application of forum rules" I agree 100%.

Each mod applies the rules differently, no doubt about it, and it has been the subject of many a discussion in the mod forum or on #staff.

In the past I have been reluctant to touch a post approved by another mod even if it broke a rule. Among moderators there is no rank so who the hell am I to undo something another mod did. That has always been my feeling anyway.

Every once and a while Geo will cruise through the forum and trash some bad posts and he has encouraged the rest of the mods to do the same. So if you see something that you feel breaks a forum rule please notify the mods.

We are trying

... and doing a great job!  I used to admin/code a multiuser online game and I understand how much time it takes, how little pay you get for that time, and how no matter how hard you try, you can never make everybody happy.

I just wish there was a way for the non-moderators to get some kind of feedback to help us understand when we break a forum rule, as seen by the moderators.  As I already said, it would be insane to expect you to send a PM with every post.  It would take too much time and effort.  Something automatic would be nice.

I would think after adding in a quick reply feature, something like this would be pretty easy... -wink wink- -nudge nudge-

"... how little pay you get for that time ..."

We get no pay for our jobs here.  Serving this community is 100% voluntary, and I agree with you completely - an automatic notification would be wonderful.  We're currently consulting with our technical administrators regarding just this issue, however I wouldn't hold my hopes too high.  It seems to be a modification that we don't have the capacity to do, but perhaps we'll be able to work something out.  No promises though

I think it's a small price to pay to have an organized and civil discussion forum, but I do understand that it can at times be frusterating.  I'll make note that if a post is only marginally in violation of the policy, I usually edit out the infraction and approve the post in partial form.  I will ask other mods to do this as well, though we are human and far from perfect
