psychoactive substances cause schizophrenia?

My friend has recently been diagnosed as schizophrenic. He wasn't schizophrenic before his use of tons of drugs including, Crank, Crystal Meth, MDMA, Marijuana, Cocaine, and last but not least Mushrooms. So maybe these drugs are illegal for a reason and not just because they are fun to use?

i believe its true. i usually here shit on salvia and shrooms but nothing when i come off. well maybe every once and awhile

thought crank and chrystal meth were the same drug... whetever...

most of the tweakers around here are schitzophrenic, but i dont know of anyone whos been using coke, x, mj, or shrooms, whos schitzo...

I think it's also kind of ignorant to say psychoactive substances cause schizophrenia. I'm sure most of it has to do with the person.

It would be ignorant to think that LSD, Mushrooms, oh wait I forgot about Salvia Divinorum might not induce at all any schizophrenic behaviour. The only reason they can't be classified as causing or not causing is because little to no testing has been done.

sorry for misunderstanding then, sounded like quite a statement.

when LSD was legal, people who took it start revolting against the government, why else would a conformist government illegalize something that makes you think anti-conformist?

from all the "testing" me and my friends have done, I dont know a single person with schizophrenia because of it. However I do know alot of tweakers that are schizophrenic, and they talk to tree's and bushes. I have heard some related studies between insomnia and schizoprehnia, maybe its sleep deprovation and stress that are causing it?

The person barely did any crystal and crank. He says the voices started before either of those drugs, as a result of LSD and lots of marijuana.

Um...if I remember right, they don't cause schizophrenia; they can bring forth tendencies or result in full blown mental conditions. This is due to pre-exsisting conditions before light was shed upon them.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

If a person does a ton of drugs (psychedelics) and starts to exhibit schizophrenic or other psychological tendencies of a marginal state and ceases drug use normal functioning can occur; unless that person has an inherent predisposition to said disorder in which case the drug use may have activated it.

I have noticed in myself, as well as other that while in the midst of heroic opiate/benzo binges some really erratic behavior; insane rambling, talking to one's self, being unsure of one's true surroundings, agoraphobic behavior, compulsive behavior, and some other things. Upon cessation, these things stopped. I have read/been told that this is somewhat normal. I am unaware of any of these behaviors continuing past the drug use.

We all know of heavy psychedelic users who go a little off the deep end, usually for life. This is not due to any neurological damage, but a severe re-evaluation of one's belief systems... like being Born Again and becoming a complete irrational nut, or severe psychological trauma.

That being said, the damage done to one's brain whilst abusing methamphetamines is permanent. The symptomatology of meth-psychosis does continue beyond discontinuation of use. It is due to neurological damage.

Dear Fluxburn,be sure to familiarise yourself with the work done in the 60's ,the scientific,psychoanalytical work.Over a thousand papers on substances like LSD (psychedelics) were published on peer rewieved magazines. There ,you will find that psychedelics arent quite exaclty "silly fun molecules" but they can have great potential in psychoterapy.

They cannot "cause" mental illness ,they can trigger it ,and that has to do with predisposition. Also,let me assume that your friend used those substances in an uncontrolled,non psychoanalytic enviroment.With the potential they have to modify behaviour in the long term do you think that maybe your friend "hardwired" in his behaviour some unwanted aspects.

When they say in research papers that psychedelic drugs are powerful tools ,they have a very good reasons for doing so. Its kind of a mental scarpel...Would one go and have fun with a scarpel not paying attention as he dances with it or waves it joyfully in the air?

There is CLEAR EVIDENCE that certain drugs including coke, e, caffine, LSD, speed, and MJ can CAUSE psychotic episodes.

However such drug induced psychosis are usually pretty short lived (from a few hours to a few days usually), although generally still very unpleasant, and have involved pretty heavy substance abuse.

There is LITTLE TO NO EVIDENCE that LSD, shrooms, speed, coke or e CAUSE schizophrenia.

However premorbid rates of drugs use are above average in those with schizophrenia.
Several therories exist to explain this; there is a causal relationship of some kind; the type of person disposed to schizophrenia is also disposed to drug use; people self-medicate early symptoms; and most commonly that drug use can 'tip the balance' in people already disposed to developing schizophrenia.

If we look at the effects of drug use in schizophrenia it becomes clear that they don't mix well.
Most unwell people i have seen take psychoactives are very dramatically effected by them, and it often increases symptoms of schizophrenia (in the short term at least).

Marajuana gets a special mention here!
MJ has been clearly demonstrated to have a significant detrimental effect of both duration and outcome in schizophrenia. FACT.
Now most people that smoke will have no problem, if fact some people with psychosis may be ok with it.
However it has a demonstrable negative effect in some folks.
I've seen dumb kids smoke heavily every day and begin to develop unpleasant mental side effects.
I've also seen people with schizophrenia go from stable to completely barking with half a joint.

These relationships are complex and not properly understood yet.
However as a bottom line, always respect what you use, and use extreme caution or plain avoid psychoactive use in schizophrenia.
