The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants
    #3821086 - 02/23/05 06:33 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Quote:

The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants
Ethnopharmacology and Its Applications
by Christian R?tsch
Foreword by Albert Hofmann

Seems that this book is coming soon. And at the first glance it looks very very nice. Could somebody please fill me in with more background information about this book and Christian R?tsch? Should I start saving money?

Thanks in advance,
ivi

Thank You, I have already seen R?tsch's vault at the Erowid.
And I know that the book is going to be about psychoactive plants (botany, history, distribution, and cultivation) :smirk:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...ks&n=507846
http://www.innertraditions.com/isbn/0-89281-978-2

I was looking more into personal opinions about Christian R?tsch and his work, and knowing that there already is a German version of this book, maybe someone can tell me how does it look compared with other "encyclopedias" in the field?

Thanks,
ivi

When you get the book, please let me know what they say is psychoactive about Euphorbia obesa, the baseball plant in the upper right. As far as I know, it and all other Euphorbias have a caustic and toxic latex (sap) and are not recreational in any way.

Hrmm. I doubt obesa will get a mention, just as I am sure many other cacti of questionable 'psychoactive' chemicals in them won't get a mention.

They sure do look pretty cool though

Yeah, I've been waiting on this book for a pretty long time now. I guess they keep pushing the release back. But I think I'll definitely get this if I have the money. I think it'll be a great book to have.

It's a bit expensive also... but I really do think it will be worth it. Looks like the price is about 80 bucks.

Here's the product description from Amazon:

Product Description:

The most comprehensive guide to the botany, history, distribution, and cultivation of all known psychoactive plants.
? Examines 414 psychoactive plants and related substances.

? Explores how using psychoactive plants in a culturally sanctioned context can produce important insights into the nature of reality.

? Contains 800 color photographs and 670 black-and-white illustrations.

In the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful plants--those known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness--have traditionally been regarded as sacred. In The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants Christian Ratsch details the botany, history, distribution, cultivation, and preparation and dosage of more than 400 psychoactive plants. He discusses their ritual and medicinal usage, cultural artifacts made from these plants, and works of art that either represent or have been inspired by them. The author begins with 168 of the most well-known psychoactives--such as cannabis, datura, and papaver--then presents 133 lesser known substances as well as additional plants known as "legal highs," plants known only from mythological contexts and literature, and plant products that include substances such as ayahuasca, incense, and soma. The text is lavishly illustrated with 800 color photographs--many of which are from the author's extensive fieldwork around the world--showing the people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the world's sacred psychoactives.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

Where did you see that info, Enter? I got confused because amazon and a couple of other online places were saying 'usually ships in 2-3 days'...I ordered mine through a herbal pharm catalog though, hope they don't take longer, I'm really looking forward to reading this book!

PS I just realised that I've got one of those Euphorbia buttons in my closet!

I wonder what is psychoactive about it?

Yes, someone please excerpt what the book has to say about E. obesa.

As I said above:

"it and all other Euphorbias have a caustic and toxic latex (sap) and are not recreational in any way."
