24 Popcorn Pints...To hell.

I started with soaking the popcorn for 24 hrs. rinsed and boiled for

about 40 min. After boiling i noticed some of the grain look split.I

let the popcorn drain for a while probably to long and PC for 45

min. After everything cool down i noticed a lot of the popcorn was

split. I inoculated and its been a week now with not 1 spec of

growth. I examined some of the popcorn and noticed it was dry . i

also had the regualr lids on with no holes. I inoculated in a glove

box. What did i do wrong..lol help a brotha out.

Regular lids with no holes? could you please go into more detail. The holes in the lids are ones we make ourselves to inoc after the jars have gone through whatever sterilization process we choose (usually PC). what are the temps you're incubating at? also if there are no holes in your lids then how do you get air exchange?

The jars were in a closest temp was between 80 and 86. Also i had the lids it came with on. Is air circulation real importand. I had no holes in lid.

air circulation is crucial. Myc and shrooms take oxygen and turn it into carbon monoxide (dioxide?). They can sufficate just like us.

<edit> also could you please go into more detail as to how you prepared everything, how did you get the spores in there with no holes?!?

LoL. maybe air exchange is my problem.. lol. I lifted the lid up in a glove box. I have the regualr metald lids on.

Anyone know if the split kernals are a problem ? Never tried grain b4 only cakes.

You surely want to let them breathe. Needs oxygen, I usually just leave the holes from inoculation.. how'd you inoculate without holes?

i alwasy had split kernals in my popcorn and its always turned out fine, i even get them when i do WBS.. i dont see why ppl say its so bad.. i havent had any problems yet..

but as for holes in your lid, i put 4 lil holes (about 1/16" diamiter)and put silicone over them for self healing caps, and one 1/4" diamitor hole in the middle of the lid and fill with polly-fill.

The problem may be lack of moisture too Kotton. When I do my popcorn, I only let it drain for 5 minutes or less, then put it in my jars to PC. They will be a little on the wet side, but popcorn seems to loose moisture pretty fast, so it doesn't really matter. I've noticed that popcorn takes awhile to get started from multispore injection, but once it gets going it moves really fast. Don't shake your jars if you have been.
