Spawning reishi grain to pasteurized substrate?
    #4644595 -

Does this work?

I saw a page that had reishi myc spawned to pasteurized newspaper in a 5 gallon bucket.  Does reishi mycelium propogate fast enough to colonize a pasteurized, "open-air" substrate?

Was reading Stamets's GGMM tonight and he only talks about sterilizing things....  Dunno.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Reishi is the fastest growing mycelium I've ever worked with. It will colonize a petri dish in four days, and a quart jar of rye in a week. If your newspaper is pasteurized, it should have no problem colonizing it before contaminants set in.

Sweet.  My grain bags that I inoculated with reishi LC have just taken off like crazy--that myc is very sturdy, thick stuff.  Thanks.

One more question--I've only spawned to pasteurized substrate in open air--I was following RR's pasteurization pictorial (I think) and it seemed that he wasn't very concerned about spawning in open air.  But then some of the people in mush cult talk about spawning in their gloveboxes.  I'm assuming the reishi grain spawn can be used in a non-sterile environment to incoculate the pasteurized wood substrate?

Thanks.

Yes. Once the grains are fully colonized, the reishi mycelium can fight off all competitors.

Thanks.

I was guessing that was correct, but, I'm still relatively new to this hobby.
