Aspen bedding as substrate?
    #574303 - 03/09/02 02:41 PM (22 years, 25 days ago)

I recently purchased a bag of Aspen particles sold as animal bedding. Does anyone have any experience using this as a substrate? I am planning to soak the particles in molasses enriched water for 24 hours and then sterilizing in the PC for an hour @ 15psi. Any help/input would be appreciated.

Is this the stuff you found? Can't complain at all. . .cheap, no aromatics. . .probably best used as spawn, not final fruiting substrate; unless you're supplementing and using bags or such. Good luck!

Suntzu,
That's the stuff exactly. Have you had any experience using this as a substrate for shiitake, reishi or garden giant (king stropharia)? I understand that I need to enrich the material with some sort of bran. Most likely, I will use wheat bran. Thanks for the advice. G

Go to a mill right now. Pick up a truckload of some fresh aspen sawdust and chips(ten bucks max). Make a stamets production block and then grow shiitake, ling chi, oyster, maitake, naimko, lions mane etc.
