Straw to Grain Success!!!! I think . . ??? PICS
    #2838836 - 06/29/04 08:32 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

About two weeks ago I PCed a jar of grain and just ripped a hand full of colonized straw out of my FP Oyster kit , opened the jar, and shoved it in there. After about a week it looked contaminated so I just took it downstairs and let it chill for a bit. Well, now it looks like the mycelium is takin' over!!

and the other side

The bottom part looks contaminated. Mycellium sometimes takes over contaminants but I doubt that in your case it'll go all the way down to the bottom. However like the Sheik said - you can use the upper part of it.

i agree that the bottom looks fubar with wetspot. it appears as though the jar was never shaken. Shaking would allow the grain to colonise more evenly thereby outracing contaminants throughout the jar and would also keep any latent water dispersed throughout the jar thereby preventing pooling which is highly conducive to wetspot.

tell me Doc... Is there any hope? I'll shake the shit out of her now. It was a far fetched attempt to colonize a grain jar and I'm suprised I got ANYTHING from it at all. Seriously, dirty ass hands just ripped out colonized straw and stuffed it in there..

well, the posters above were right, the top portion was ususable. was is operative. if you shook the jar in the pics you've prolly ruined it by spreading the established contamination throughout the jar.

if you haven't done that then you will want to carefully remove the healthy colonised portion somewhere like outdoors where the nasties in the jar won't get into your grow area. be sure to leave a decent layer of healthy mycelium in the jar so that you can be fairly certain that the culture you do take doesn't have contms riding on it. it is still a touchy situation regardless, as contams could be invisibly present throughout. you will find out quick when you spawn it to fresh substrate (maybe test on agar first?).
