I first picked up a guitar around the summer of 2001(not 69 ), but only messed around on it a couple times.  I cameback to it in the beginning of 2002 sometime.

I've been playing for about 3 and half years and I love it.  I find the whole concept of becoming a "guitar mastering" frustrating though.  I constantly get stuck in ruts, where my playing is dull, repetative, boring and lame...but I always get out of the rut and add something new to my style.  I've been stuck in a rut for the past 6 months though and it's becoming quite frustrating.

From the beginning and still to this day, heavy influences were/are  Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Clapton, Ac/Dc, Metallica, CCR, and various riffs from classic rock.  At one point I took a small course in school to learn classical guitar.  And in the past year I've gotten into bb.king and other blues.

I'd like to be better for how long I've been playing.

I'm not to good at learning off books. I don't have the attention span for it. So yea, I kind of know it's my own responsiblity for not being so good...not able or willing to put the time in.

I have so many issues of guitar one, guitar world, guitar legends, etc. A lot of them have come with dvds, cds and whatnot. I have picked up a few things here and there. I did pick up this really cool guitar dvd though. It's called "play rock guitar: the ultimate dvd guide". It's actually pretty fantastic. It gives lessons from begginer to advanced on many styles of music including classic rock and blues, heavy metal and thrash, alternative rock, punk and new wave, emo/screamo. Teaches basics and advanced lessons on power chords, scales, alternate tunings, chord building, building speed, modes and many other various crap. It's done by a guy called, Andy Aledort(who I guess Joe Satriani gives a big thumbs up for ability).

i bought a guitar last november. i tried to teach myself, but it's too easy to get distracted. someday maybe i'll get some real lessons, because i know i could make this thing bleed my soul if i knew how to play it. i have a lot of respect for those of you that can.

I was the same way when I first started playing. I have some serious ADD, sometimes. :crazy2:You will eventually learn how to "zone" out and just flow with chords, or scale. Whatever style that you prefer to play will develop itself, in time. Just stick with it pretty consistently.

I've been playing for... 7 years... is that right? i'm not that old... wait... My first suggestion to you is loose the overpriced lessons talk to a buddy who plays (surely you know at least one) or get some books from the library and teach yourself. The guitar is a very personal instrument and all a teacher can teach you is the notes some chords and maybe a couple strumming patterns you can learn that on your own easily and at your own pace. I am completely self taught and I think I'm pretty damn good, although i do favor the bass and the piano more.

whoever told you that is your enemy.
