Ugh, I know. I've been half trying to teach myself for almost a year.
I'm not at all musically talented.

i think in order to play well you have to have an ear for music. i pick up on stuff quickly because i listen to a lot of the music i want to end up playing so i'd suggest maybe start there? maybe go to a nearby community college they have cheap group lessons

HAVE FUN!

i have a ear for what music I like or what sounds good,

replicating that is another thing,

i don't think i'll ever be like hendrix and hear a note and be able to replicate it without having to look up the tab,

now that shit is amazing.

i started playing in july, just learning open chords, not worrying about barre chords, and just learning stuff like tom petty, bob seger, some zep (over the hills), and seek and destroy was the first song i could really play (thanks to justin guitar)

its really only now that i'm startin to do chords changes easily, without looking, and even individual finger placement, as well as moving along the frets and knowing where i am.

but now where i'm really having trouble is trying to sing and play at the same time. i can play the song fine, but as soon as i try to sing it, i lose my rhythm. if anybody's got any input for that, that'd be appreciated, i was actually thinkin about making this a thread on here earlier, but i'm glad i saw this one!

make sure to practice with a metronome as often as possible, timing should NEVER be overlooked - a small amount of well timed notes always sounds better than a inaccurate slurry of technical playing

try to never play quicker than you can play a song perfectly - that's a major way bad habits are formed.

its mostly really just practice practice practice :yesnod:

let your emotions and soul guide you through the process. you have to work it like sex, for a lack of better comparisons. work it and let your lid off your soul and emotions.
you'll naturally want to take it farther and you'll be more focused on continuing the feeling than worrying about your finger placement.
once you have that then if you really care your fingers will move for you rather than slow you down.

positive vibes tho, stick in there its worth it. musick prevails

I was in your exact position OP, but let me tell you that everything will gradually get easier if you persevere. I've been playing for around 6 months and I've definitely made some awesome progress.

At the start I was having the same problems: chord changes (progressions) and barred chords. When I started playing I thought my hands were too small and chords were a real strain. As I progressed I could forms without tensing any muscles in my hand and stretch to around 4 - 5 frets.

The best advice I can give you is to practice the things that you can kinda do until theyre easy, then move on to the next hardest technique and so on..

The order that I learned was:
- First I learned to play C, A, G, E, D and other chords like Am, Em, Dm, A7, G7, C7, etc.
- Then I practiced changes - C to G and back was the hardest at first so I did it for a few minutes whenever I played.
- Then I tried F - my first barred chord, which was a real bitch - Bm was another one.
- Once you get barred chords the whole neck opens up to you with power chords.
- Then there are more chords and techniques for you to learn.. it never ends lol

I just play whenever I feel like it and never get too frustrated. 30 min one day, 1 hour two days later.. etc
do what you feel like!

by the way - easiest songs to learn
The Way I am - Ingrid Michaelson (the bass line is all you need to play on the guitar, forget the barred stuff)
Closing Time - Semisonic (only four chords - G, D, Am, C - great progression practice)
basic fingerstyle songs:
Such Great Heights - Iron and Wine cover
We are Going to be Friends - White Stripes
