if im starting guitar

I just ordered a guitar and it came in the mail yesterday. I don't know the first thing about guitar. I'm starting out lefty so if anyone has any advice on where I should start let me know. I'm willing to dedicate myself 100% but want to start out the best possible way. Any suggestions?

Learn open-face chords like G C D A E F. then pick up Em Am Dm Fm
With just these few, you can play thousands of easy songs.

Practice going from one chord to another. Start training your fingers to remember where they're supposed to be to form varios chords. Gradually start learning new ones and then bar chords.

Professional lessons are also great for the beginner.

practice technique... the position of the fingers, the way you play every string...

this way it'll sound cleaner...

i just think it's the most important thing to learn..and start practicing that on the very beginning..(it's going to be boring..but will make you better..)

I have played guitar for years.


If I were you I would learn you chords in this order. This order particularly because of finger positioning. G, C, D, A, E, F, B. Also learn the minors of these major chords along with them. You find yourself making chords you don't even know the name but are all relative to key.

F and B are the hardest major chords because the require baring. With reading you will learn this technique. Practice no less than 1 hour a day everyday for the first year. When I started I put in no less 4-5 hours everyday... The more time the faster it comes.

The key element to beeing a good mucisian is being able to take a strange melody and run with it. All great guitar players are masters of improvising and techinque.

An essential that I didn't find until a year ago is Zen Guitar. This teaches you nothing about how to physically play the guitar but how to enhance your guitar playing with your mind. It TRUELY tells you things you will never read out of any technical guitar book. I ordered mine of amazon used w/shipping for less than $5.00.... If you are going to take the role of guitar.... you need to find your path. If you can't afford/don't want to pay for it, download the ebook.. I am sure it available somewhere. This will teach you the fundementals better than any other book. This book plus a basic music theory book will get you started for a LONG time.

Maybe after that you should learn the pentatonic scale which is used in blues/rock alot, just look it up on the net, it's the easiest scale.
Also, when you progress, I wouldn't even bother to learn shit like Phrygian scales and what not, they're for fret wankers like Steve Vai.
Just play around with notes up and down the fret board and figure out what notes sound nice.


Also, once you've learnt all the basic open chords you should definetaly start learning the bar chords as these are the basis to most rock songs.


When I first started playing guitar about 10 years ago I would learn simple stuff like Nirvana songs.

You definetely should learn to read Tab(tablature) so you can quickly learn new songs, it's real easy to learn, it's basically just numbers on lines, the numbers tell you what fret to play and the lines represent the stings.

I got a shitty one just to get started just in case I get discouraged. I wouldn't want to spend a shit load of money then give up, you know?

When I start to get some stuff down like chords and stuff, I'll probably go get a nice one. But til then I'll just go with what you guys told me to start.

Why? What would you recommend? I don't really know what the best stuff is but I have a pretty good idea.

And I know what you're saying when you talk guitar cuz my friend always tries to explain it to me.

man, i remember when i first started guitar (7th grade, now a junior in college), here are the things you will get frustrated with:

1) trying to strum, but only select strings. My first guitar lesson i had to play the 'D' chord, requiring only the 4 highest strings to be played, my teacher kept strumming only those 4 but i kept hitting all of them, unable to hit only the selected ones.

2) making your fingers move in weird patterns you normally don't encounter. get used to trying to move your ring finger, and having your pinky or middle finger move instead - very frustrating.

3) stretching your hand, its hard, you'll learn

4) when picking single notes, playing the wrong string SUCKS, cuz it sounds like balls, but you'll get it in due time.

I wanted to quit 02948029384 times, and eventually i did stop taking lessons after i graduated and had to go to college, but here i picked up a cheap $150 acoustic mandolin an learned how to play, and now i'm in a band playing a $650 5-string electric mandolin, the 'mandoblaster'

playing insturments is fun!

If you want to step up later I would suggest a Squire stratocaster, you could get one for only $150-$200.
I own an Epiphone Les Paul Custom which gost me £400($800)
it's a great guitar.

Probably one of the most frustrating yet most important things to playing guitar is alternate picking. Learn the meaning, then learn the technique. If you skip this technique you will never be as succesfull as if you used it. I hated it more than anything in the beginning but love it now.

Yeah...instruments is really fun. I'm already a drummer and want to open my musical realm and start creating my own songs so..

Thanks for all of your suggestions guys. Feel free to add anything you might have missed. You'll probably be the ones to know about how my musical journey is going more than anyone else so I'll probably be asking for a lot more help on the subject.

go to the lessons tab, then search "Steve Cass"

go through his lessons starting from number 1, do everything he sais. the reason i like this guys instruction is, he doesn't only teach you how to play, but why and WHAT your actually playing, things many players go through without learning. baby steps like that are needed if you really wanna become proficient at the instrument.
