NOt much info in all of that....

How many holes do you have in your lids?

Have you tipped the jars upside down for air exchange?

How are you heating the jars?

Anyway, from what I hear, you should tip the jars upside down
so the mycelium will get fresh oxygen....

Hope that didn't post... Tipping them over will help finish the bottom ( colonization )

I have 5 8 ounce jelly jars I bought at the swap meet, and
after innoculation I have been tipping them upside down
every 2 days, and after that 2 days, I tip them back upright,
so far, no contams, and the jars were innoculated on the 9th, and nearly full of mycelium.

As far as time goes, that depends on temperature, and a whole host of other factors to large to bring up here.

I would suggest you read more about the colonization process before you proceed much further.

i agree with newbieshroomer. remove anything you covered the holes with and flip. the top being collonized realy protects the bottom a lot. i always try to flip smothly and quickly as to disturb the verm barrier as little as possable for as little time as possable.

Take off the tape, loosen the lids, and flip those babies over. They're just craving some fresh air.

Yep it's all about the flip when the bottom won't colonize
even a little pat when flipped.. will colonize fast!

you're not just putting the jars upside down, you actually smack the jar (upside down)onto a book or a newspaper or something, which in turn separates the cake from what was the bottom of the jar. now you can see about a half inch of space between what was the bottom of the jar and the cake...

this is hard to explain... anyone have a picture?

its all co2 buildup - flip 'em or better still - take the tape off and cover the holes with an alcohol swab to act as a quasi filter...

upside down,so the cake does not slide back to the bottom.

The C02 build up goes away after you flip em because......

when the jar is colonizing normally, the mycelium gives off C02 as waiste. C02 being heavier than normal air, sinks and stays in the bottom of the jar. Now when you flip it, this C02 that has built up inside the jar is alowed to seep out the holes in the lid, and fresh air brought in to replace it. does that make sence?? ya it do buckeroo

hey boxtop, what would happen if the cake slid back to the bottom? would it then not work? would that eliminate the whole point of flipping it to begin with? would the co2 be sucked back into the jar? please educate the shroomery.
