silnylon
    #4628798 - 09/07/05 05:47 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I had never heard of silnylon until I started posting at whiteblaze.net. The ultralight hikers there are hardcore about their silnylon.
It's lightweight nylon impregnated with silicone. Waterproof, very lightweight.
Fairly new product it seems.. they are starting to make tarps, tent flys, stuff sacks, even ultralight backpacks made of out them.
Well I just recently ordered 2 silnylon stuff sacks and just got them today.
Awesome material.. very very light. Super thin.. it's a transparent material. Feels like slippery rice paper. Looks like it would rip or get holes pretty easy.. but I hear they are a lot more durable than they look/feel.

Anyway.. just felt like sharing. Thought you guys would be interested if you haven't heard of this stuff already.

I'll have to check it out. Its always interesting to see what advances they make in modern materials. I know those ultra-light freaks are into all kinds of cutting-edge ways to trim weight.

I've never worried much about weight as long as I can keep a pack around 50-60 pounds for a 2 week outing. In fact, I kinda like the workout of carrying a heavy load as long as I'm not doing anything extreme. I often pack a 30-40 pound pack for a single weekend trip.

But I'll look into that silnylon. Sounds interesting. It may be a good material for a lightweight survival kit.

Have you tried ripping it to test its durability?

It sounds really cool, how much weight can it carry, do you know?

Yeah.... i just seen a backpack made out of this stuff in Aspen! I think it was a DANA but i'm not sure, the pack looked like paper and must of only weighed a couple of pounds. It looked so cheezy i tryed to poke my finger nail threw it, with no luck! Seems to be pretty strong stuff!

Some of those silnylon packs weigh less than a pound
I tried ripping it (not very hard though.. just bought these  ) and it held up fine. We'll see the true test when I take it out on the trail.
