Wow really? I figured at those temps you'd need at the very least, a pad.. if not an undershelter to prevent the freezing back syndrome. Was that with a down bag or synthetic? I'm assuming synthetic.. since down has basically no insulation on the side all the weight is on.
Either way, that's awesome.

It's a synthetic bag. The Army at least made the right move with its choice of sleeping bags.

Nice.
So I tested mine out the other night.. temps dropped to ~35ish. All I had was my down sleeping bag rated to 20 degrees. Of course.. that's not counting the bottom.. the part my weight was on was basically zero insulation and I was freezing. I grabbed my closed cell foam pad and put that under me - instant relief and warmth.
Of course, the parts it wasn't covering was still cold (shoulders).. which is why some of those hammock guys sell pads with 'wings' and such. But the hammock definitely felt different with the pad. I'm thinking about investing in one of those underquilts, or an undercover.. which is basically sil-nylon covering on the bottom and an open cell foam pad inbetween. Either one is supposed to keep things nice and insulated on the bottom down to about 0-10 degrees.
Or perhaps I'll just make my own
.. or get a synthetic bag. But man I love my down bag... and it packs so small...

Keep us posted. I won't be putting much time in my hammock this winter but it'll be good to know how those underquilts work out, and more importantly, how well they pack.

Well, the most popular ones seem to be the ones from THESE GUYS ... they pack quite small as you can see... and that is their cheapest underquilt. Fuck if I'm going to pay MORE than I paid for my hammock.. for what is essentially a large down sleeping bag with water resistant shell and a suspension system. That just seems like a total ripoff to me. Especially for something I won't be using ALL the time.
The undercover from Hennessy is half as much and seems like it would get the job done for most cold nights- (Waterproof, windproof SilNylon double wall bottom cover used with detachable, contoured open cell foam pad. Designed to work together. UnderCover will not work with closed cell foam pads under hammock. weight 14 oz., plus comes with unique,double-ended 1 oz. stuffsack.) That seems like a pretty good option. And according to THIS.. people claim to have slept warm in their hennessys at -10 to -30 using the undercovers and overcover (the "supershelter")
Speer has a pretty interesting thing for pad setups - http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/SPE.htm But that just looks kind of uncomfortable.
I'm still looking at options, but for now I'll probably stick with the pad I have, it gets the job done well enough. Thing is the underquilts seem to be the best thing, as they can help you sleep comfortably into the negatives, and they are the lightest and least bulkiest in terms of packed weight/bulk for bottom insulation. I kind of doubt my pads ability to keep my back warm and consequently.. the rest of my body warm past about 30 degrees or so, or with high winds.Pads take up a lot more pack space.. they aren't as comfortable as sleeping in just the hammock itself.. and they tend to slide around.
I might be able to convince myself to build my own undercover, if I can convince myself I wouldn't totally screw it up. But one thing is for sure, I don't want to pay $250-300 for a blanket for the bottom of my hammock.

These things are made for tree climbing expeditions in redwood groves and such, heavy duty as hell, and made for sleeping in the treetops hundreds of feet above the ground, so you know their meticulously well made and very safe.

Dude, in Washington those hammocks are just rain collectors.

What Hammock did you end up getting? That thing looks great!
And Crasher, obviously you didn't look at the site too well, because there are covers you can set up, some of which are more roomy then other hammock covers, their like full tents, and of course you can use tarps and get creative with the design of them.

Got the explorer ultralight.. also the oversized (144" x 132") silnylon fly. Quite a bit more coverage than the stock fly.

Have you gotten a chance to use it yet? How's the comfort and heat retention?
This is getting me stoked on going hammock camping this spring!

Yeah I slept in it for two nights. Amazingly comfortably. The one thing with hammocks is the heat retention on the bottom side is close to nil. Unlike sleeping on the ground.. in a hammock you have free air moving under you and no real insulation unless you add it yourself. In warm nights it's perfect.. in cold weather you have to take measures for underneath insulation or you'll freeze from the bottom.
There are several methods for insulation.. closed cell foam pads under you.. this is what I used and it did a pretty good job for ~35 degrees.. but it doesn't have any insulation on the parts it's not covering and I doubt it would work as well for freezing temps. The best option I've seen is underquilts.. which is basically a big down sleeping bag attached to the bottom of the hammock. Ala something like this - http://www.tothewoods.net/ImagesStayWarm/thru-hiker-underquilt.jpg
Crasher said he slept in a synthetic sleeping bag and it kept him warm in low temps. A down bag has very little to no insulation on the part all your weight is on because it depends on loft to retain warmth. Which is the concept of having a lofty down bag underneath the hammock, no weight is on it. Problem is the underquilts built for hammocks that I have seen.. are quite pricey.
But yeah, hammock are amazing. The biggest issue with them is keeping warm in colder temps, as a general rule of thumb you will be sleeping 10-20 degrees colder than if you were on the ground and even moreso with winds. So one needs to take measures to provide some insulation and wind protection. But properly insulated, I have heard of people sleeping snug in them at -30 degrees, in norway.
http://hammockforums.net/ is a great resource.

I've got one of these.
Pretty cheap, comfy, packs small.
No insulation whatsoever, but the hammock works to sleep in for nice weather.
