I bought a 100W fish tank heater today, and right now I have it in a 1L wine glass (large glass for breathing the wine, only thing I could find that was the right size)
The water is plenty warm, at least 40C, but its not heating my rubbermaid... Would lining the rubbermaid with tinfoil be any help? Is it the fact that my water jar is too tiny to radiate enough heat?

I keep my rubbermaid in a closet with the light on. No need for a heater that way. Keeps it nice and warm. and if you need darkness just cover with dark cloth.: )

I posted a similar question a second ago on the adv. cult. forum. Maybe you're having the same problem i have, i also use a glass jar (aprox. 1L) all inside a cardboard box, the heater and water goes all the way up till 86F but the air inside the incubator doesn't go after 77F, i was thinking of using a plastic jar instead but i still don't know.
BTW, the incubator (box) is inside a closet, i've allready used a light as a heatsource but there's allways a risk of fire so i droped the idea.
Peace,

if yur 100% stuck on using yur water heater idea, then yur gonna have to run an airpump through the water and bubble out warm air into the rest of the box. There's no way a glass of warm water is gonna radiate enough heat to warm up the rest of the box.. it just cant without some method of spreading the heat around faster.. such as hot air moving throughout the box... hence the air pump.

MAIA - Doesnt the box get all soggy? My walls in the rubbermaid are dripping with water. Humiditiy is 100%
And I went to the store, hotpads were 25 bucks. But he said not to use them cuz they just heat and heat, he said I'd kill my "fish" unless I watched the temp manually like 24/7
So I upgraded to a more expensive heater, he taught me a trick to get it up to 110F rather than the 88F they normally max at. This should allow it to radiate much more heat. Plus this one is fully submerable, which the other wasnt.
And on top of that, I put weather stripping around the seal of the container. Should be an hour or two before I know how good the temp is.

There isnt any "humidity" knob on this fish tank heater. Only way I can control it is to open the lid, and then out goes the heat, rendering this usesless
Oh, and beppomarx... You're wrong, got this thing cranked so the water is at 105F... And guess what? The thing heated to 92F. So I have it at 100F now to see what kind of temp it gives me. I'm aiming for 85F +/- about 2F
