I agree with this thread. I have never attempted to even use an incubator. After innoculating my jars I put them in a box with bubble wrap for protection and throw them in a moderately warm place. I tend to stay away from areas with evident convection to avoid contams. Yeah, it takes longer, up to 2 months, but that is why we space out our batches so we always have something to play with!

Another thought. I have had some good luck using a cable box as an incubator. When the cable box is left on it is quite warm to the touch. I take jars and place them in a box. I place this box on the cable box and always leave it on. If the temps are too hot I take magazines and stack them on the cable box to reduce the amount of heat transfered to the box. Anyways, just a thought. I don't know why you guys argue over stuff. "We are all ignorant, just in different subjects"

I find the warmer temps will help germination occur quicker. Once they are germinated, you can lower the temp a bit. I just checked a jar of Tapalpa that had only germinated in one spot. I set it aside, I was going to toss it but forgot about it. It's been sitting in the kitchen for a couple weeks in 50 - 70 degree temps and is now nearly fully colonized.
It's kinda like a chicken egg, it won't hatch until it's warm enough but once it's hatched, the chicken can live at lower temps. And I think chickens and mushrooms have a lot in common.
