What are the easiest, cheapest, and most reliable incubators
    #2304378 - 02/05/04 12:26 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

What's the cheapest and easiest way to incubate? Space heaters are out of the question, inefficient. Any ideas?

Use the tub in the tub. All you need is a two same sized tubs with a submersible fish tank heater.

Alright, is there a way to not use two tubs? There's only one of the kind SWIM has. Is there an alternative to using two tubs?

i use the following, sometimes humidty can build up which is a bitch but its ok.

Cut a pop bottle nearly in half at the top so you can put stuff in it. leave a little hinge thingy though. put a dishcloth in the bottome so the heater doesnt melt through, fill it 2/3 with water, and then put in a fish tank heater, mines 100W and does great. Then run the cord back out the bottle where its cut, and close it up. use electrical tape or whatever tape you have available thats watertight and try and make as good a seal as you can around where you cut. its almost impossible to make it waterproof but do ur best. then toss that in the incubator with the jars. You will likely have to take the tape off a few times until the temp is just right... i just put extra towels on top if its too cold and take em off if its too hot..

pm me if you have any questions

Tub in tub. I add the pump to stir the water so it doesn?t just heat up from the bottom up. Seems to work. I also tie the tubs together so they can be filled more.

I have the same heater that Magash has and it only cost about $15. How much do they cost where you live?

If you cant afford a heater, then probally the darkest warmest place you can just shove them and leave them will work....

Magash- Your middle picture, is the white on the jars lid tyvek? If so are there metal lids under the tyvek? Is that a small round band-aid covering the innoc hole? Sorry to ask off topic questions.... Im gonna go get some tyvek today...

1. Yep it's good old tyvek, wouldn't use anything else.

2. Yes there are metel lids under the tyvek. One 3/8 inch hole or the size of a cable wire, and one small inoc hole.

3. Yep there small band aids. I use em cause they come steril.
