You don't need an incubator...
    #652566 - 05/30/02 04:59 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Unless it's really cold or you are in a hurry and need your jars done a day or two sooner. I never use a incubator. My room temp is 70-77. Every jar I've ever done has been 100% colonized in 14-21 days. Some faster strains will colonize in about a week. All this at room temp. Why worry about a incubator? Aquarium heaters, heating pads, hot light bulbs? All for just slightly faster colonization times? Not worth if for me anyway. Just innoculate your jars, put them back in the box and put them on your closet shelf.

well with slower colonization times wouldnt your jars be more open to contams? Isnt that the whole reason why PF suggests using 1/2 pints in lieu of full pints as well....colonization time...the longer your substrate is uncolonized the easier it is to become contaminated

No. If you follow procedure correctly everything in you jar should be sterile except your mushroom spores. They should not contaminate even if it takes 2 months for them to colonize.

It is nearly impossible to have a completely sterile substrate.

The more the conditions favor the growth of your wanted mycelium, the less the chance that some undesired organisms will grow.

Ya' know sometimes I wonder if you know what you're talking about. I mean you diss Goolag for what, for posting a fucking pic and lettng people know about his successful colonization times? You need to keep your mouth shut sometimes.
And yeah, a great cultivator has a great incubator, they don't throw the jars in the fucking closet like you, you dumbass.

First of all, NOBODY gets pint jars near 100% colonized from spores in a spore syringe in 4 days. NOBODY.

Second, I'm not going to keep my mouth shut when I see someone lying about their success to gain approval from others.

Third, I'm not saying incubators are bad. They do help. I know that. I agree most good cultivators use them. This post is for those who dont know how to set one up right or dont have the space or don't want anyone to see it and ask what its for. A lot of newbies think that they must have one in order to participate in this hobby. I'm simply letting them know that it's not a necessity. Their jars will still colonize perfectly fast enough without one.

Fourth, can you please post some exaples of other posts where you're "wondering if I know what I'm talking about"?
If you're going to accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about, I'd like to see some examples.

Fifth, if I'm a dumbass for keeping my jars in a box in the closet and not in an incubator then you just called A LOT of other people a dumbass too.

No, I refuse to sit here and bicker with you and waste my time. The fact is, you're jealous of his success and you know you could never duplicate what he's done, even if you did have a fucking incubator. And that threatens you, because you're weak minded.
Case closed.

The last 2 sentences of my reply to Goolag were:

"I'd love to be wrong. If so, that's amazing."

Go and check for yourself...

You CANNOT innoculate a jar of anything with cubensis spores and have near 100% in 4 days. It's impossible. Incubator or not. They need to germinate first. That takes time. Ask anyone that's been cultivating for awhile and they'll agree.

In reply to:

you're jealous

No...If it's true then I'm happy for him.

In reply to:

you know you could never duplicate what he's done

You're right about that. I'm positive I'll never have a jar colonize that fast.

In reply to:

And that threatens you, because you're weak minded.

If I'm so weak minded then why am I so easily able to make you look stupid?

By the way, I see you failed to post those examples I asked for. You don't have the time right?

I justed wanted to restate the point of this thread:

An incubator is not essential to growing mushrooms unless you live in a very cold place or need your jars colonized a little faster. Room temp. works fine.

That's it!!!

Thanks for starting the flaming C12H17N204P.

You might want to check the posts of the one you are going to flame before doing so.

im sorry, i got to agree with bp. there is no way. i got jars that i nocked up with a STRONG myc suspension made from agar plates. i know what im doing, and followed every process for optimal growth, and his jars are only a day older than mine, w/ twice the growth??? from multispore UNGERMINATED spore syringes??? nahhhhh dont see it. maybe the orissa's im using aint as fast as the ....taz was it? he used, but they are fairly fast colonizers, but that still wouldnt give him that much edge.
but back to the topic, there is a lot of things that dont NEED to be done, such as building an incubator, verm barrior, etc etc. but ( especially with newbies) every thing you can do to speed up the process, elimate a chance of contam, or help in anyway, is a less chance of failure. i remember starting out with the **cough*** COUGH** great shroom wizards tek. he eliminated a lot of the things that are not actually neccessary, and SOME have luck with it, but ( and i am keeping a SW failure post log from here) MOST DO NOT..... makes you wonder how many newbies have said fuck growing shrooms, from using his method, and getting contams out the ass.... if building an incubator, flaming the needle between jars, etc etc can make a difference, then why get on here and say it isnt needed?

OK NEWBIES: it isnt needed, but success will be more likely if you use one.... its up to you to decide

Thanks for the comments ChromeChrow but are you saying that room temp colonization of jars will cause failure?

If so, then I retract my opinion. My new opinion is that an incubator is absoultely required to grow shrooms. DO NOT attept to grow shrooms without one because you will get contaminates from the excessivly slow room temp. colonization time.

I repeat:

My post says "GRAIN TO GRAIN" and "SIX DAYS"????

How does this help your case?

I agree, an incubator would have possibly made this happen in 4 days but it was STILL A GRAIN TO GRAIN transfer!!!!

No spores had to germinate first!!!!!!!

Lol, I remember shroomwizard's tek. A friend tried it about 2 or 3 years ago from the NF site I believe, as his first casing. Man did those contams suck. Probably about 2 dry grams from 24 half pints (minus about three from contam). Oh well, at least they were potent as hell from what I heard.
