A success story
    #459657 - 11/15/01 06:33 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

There once was a troll. He lived a lolney life under a bridge scaring people who tried to pass over his bridge. One day this troll was in his little troll house mixing up two jars (for whatever fucked up reasons he had) of substrate. Weirdly, it only filled up one jar full and the second jar was filled with a pitiful 1/2 1/2pint of substrate. He boiled for one hour via. PF Tek and innoculated as normal. 8 days later (due to bad conditions under the bridge, we will never know) the jars showed signs of colonization. I am informed that it was GC spores obtained from 3M. Well, two weeks later, despite the volume difference of each jar, he has 100% colonized substrate cakes. He bithed them into a small troll sized terrarium with wetted perlite. The full cake pinned like a beauty. He harvest 20+ mushroom from the first flush and recently harvested a second flush of 20+ mushrooms. Unfortuantly, the other cake (1/2 1/2 pint) didn't so so well. It produced three or four pins that were picked before they had a chance to grow. He was going to throw the jar into his little troll garbage when he though to himself: hey! why not try a casing! That he did. As sloppy as he was with his dirty unwashed little troll hands he mixed up a bottom layer of vermiculite and water (he didnt even measure, just guessed) and threw it in a bowl he used to eating ceral in the mornings before he went out to scare people. He crumbled the cake and placed it in there in very unflat porportions and made a very small top layer of verm and water maby only 1/4 of an inch or less. He colonized for 3 days at 86 degrees as was happy to see great colonization despite the cake had been in fruiting conditions before. He birthed the cake in less than optiomal conditions (with a paper bag around it) and let it sit. One day while the little troll was tripping he decided to check on it only to find 3 or four ok sized mushroom. His first casing a success! A nice flush (some shroom grew from the bottom and made it to the sides and up) which he was able to take a sporeprint and will attempt at continuing the cycle later on today. Well, he decided to place the casing in better conditions and was suprised to see 15 or more pins in early stages of development. He is a very happy troll now. Thing this little troll has learned:

1. Casings kick ass. He hhas counted his chickens before they have hatched and seems that he will get a combined first and second flush of 25+ mushroom from a single 1/4 pint cake. WOW!
2. Shroom will make it towards the light even if it means battling from the underside of a casing and making it to the sides and up.

interesting.
some people even use clear containers for their casings, to encourage pinning on the bottom, too.
