It most likely does get gills but they mature so fast that you didn't even see em.

Just harvest when they are fully grown. There is no loss in potency IMO.

My question is, how come there isn't that flap (I'm assuming that's the veil) covering the underside of the gills?

A dawg told me that it doesn't need a "flap" because nature tells the Mushroom it is ready to drop spores and continue the lineage. If a flap existed on the underside it greatly reduce spore distibution.

On one hand, my FOAF would harvest the shroom early since the "veil" already "broke". But on the other hand, they are not that big. He just doesn't want them to lose potency during sporulation.

I do not believe (nor have I seen any evidence to support) the theory that shrooms lose potency during sporulation. IMHO of course.

the whole "pick them just afetr the veil breaks" thing is a bit spurious in my mind....
Yes, shrooms picked during, or just after initial sporulation DO have superior potency to overblown, wavy-capped, 2 week old shrooms, but a give or take a day or 3 it doesn't make much (or any) of a difference...IME

that picture of 'PF Classic' has a weird cap color...all of the pictures i've ever seen have dark red caps... here is my friends pic of his fatass - the veil just started to break in this picture so he harvested a few hours after

and this picture is with a flashlight to show the veil breakage.
