few questions from first timer

This is my first time growing mushrooms and I just did the PF TEk method yesterday. I just have a few questions about a few things that came up during the first steps following innoculation.


First, how fine does the brown rice have to be? To be honest I didnt feel like going out and buying a coffee grinder because I had a food processor and I thought that might do an alright job. Well it practicaly made 3/4 of it into dust and the other quarter into tiny chuncks of brown rice. First, is this right? Or should I say screw it and just get a frekin coffee grinder? Not that im a cheap ass but im on a fixed finance so I try not to make any unneccesary purchases, but if a coffee grinder is required than I will buy one.

Second, how long a shelf life to spores have in a sarynge in a cool, dark, dry place? Mine are a little old, but the PF TEk guide says they are good for up to a year and a half.

Lastly, how fine does your vermiculite have to be? The stuff I bought was just like extrememly fine, like sand without the pebbles. Is this good?

Hi LSD Pirate,

1. The rice can be whole, if you want. But messing around with moisture content with whole rice can be a real pain. Your smaller chunks will work just fine, but precooking them a bit might help. Read the 9er Tek here before diving in. Do a search for it. It involves whole rice. But you should be able to buy bags of brown rice flour -- Arrow Mills brand, Bob's, etc.

2. As long as it's really cool, really dark, etc. they should keep for years. I've kept spore prints and syringes sealed in a container at the bottom of the fridge for almost two years now. I used some spores a few weeks ago and they germinated with no problems.

3. Sand size is too small in my estimation. Stick with "horticultural grade" -- about the size of Grape Nuts cereal. The brand I happen to use is Country Cottage or something like that (I'm at work -- the bag is 15 miles away). It's a light tan bag with blue print.
