Second Grow Attempt, Questions
    #1050016 - 11/13/02 07:44 PM (14 years, 30 days ago)

I am currently planning my second attempt at cultivation. My first try consisted of using two spore syringes to inject 12 half pint jars. Unfortunately I decided to keep the jars warm with a heat pad, which ultimately dried them out completely. This time I plan on using 24 Ball canning jars with three spore syringes. I am now thinking that:

An incubator will be made out of a rubbermaid container. I plan to heat the incubator with a fish tank heater, the kind that is rod-like that you stick in a jar of water. You know? I was at petsmart the other day and i didnt see the submersible kind which would be used for the rubbermaid inside a rubbermaid technique.

For the terrarium I will use a rubbermaid with vents filled with polyfil. Then I will heat with the same method as above and use perlite for humidity. I have never understood how air pumps and fish tank hoses work, but I know that I need them to supply fresh air to the cakes/casing. Do I simply buy a pump and stick the end of the tubing in the terrarium? Any explanation as to how these pumps work?

I read on this board that colonization of the substrate is much quicker when 5 holes to inject spores are made. Four around the outside and one in the middle. What do you think about this? If you have any comments or can answer any of my questions, I really do appreciate it. Thanks! AJ

If you are gonna use the non-submersible kind, I'd say use a styrofoam cooler instead of a rubbermaid, styrofoam is a better insulator.

If you are gonna use an air pump, just stick an air stone on the end of the tubing and drop that in a jar of water/peroxide solution.

Yes, the five holes do speed up colonization time.

you probabbly dont want to heat your terrarium. Optimal fruiting temp is less than optimal colonizing temp. Just keep it at room temp with high humdiity your cakes will fruit just fine.

Peace

My dog has great success with a heating pad on the low setting, THE SECRET is to go to Home Depot and buy a digital timer, program it to turn on for only 20 minutes at a time every-other hour. (on from 12:00 - 12:20 then 2:00 - 2:20 etc) insulate with a towel or two and you will see temps at a steady 78-86F. I think you will only need to spend ten bucks to do this. I t might be a more cost effective, easier and low maintenace approach than the old tank heater trick.

Be careful with this plan. The digital timer I got only lets you program four events per day. So I couldn't do this. Make sure that the digital timer you get allows better scheduling before you buy it.

The analog timer I bought works perfectly for this type of scheduling. It allows you to schedule in 15 minute increments.

walmart for $5 has a timer with a 24 hour clock at 15 minute intervals. you push in each 15 minutes section in to program it. very easy. very effective. i have two lamps on that alternate so i dont burn my apartment down when im not home. keeps temps up and provides light.

yes, i got me one of them 15 minute $5 dealies.

i second the suggestion to use a styrofoam cooler for incubator and don't heat the fruiting chamber unless necessary.
