Rye Substrate?

A friend of mine told me that using organic rye works much faster than the traditional vermiculite/rice flour cakes.
Is there any truth to this and what steps should I follow to ensure success?

#2 yes there is...
by being able to "shake" your grain you will distribute points of innoculation
much faster in the jar, i see qts colonize in 5-8 days depending on temp, strain , etc.

where do you find rye i have looked all over . but i don't want to order it on the net.thanx

Yes, rye grain works better. It's also cheap, and ends up costing less than buying vermiculite and brown rice. It colonizes faster as well. With rye grain you need to use a pressure cooker, however, to ensure complete sterilization. Sterilize at 15 psi for an hour. You can find rye grain at most health food stores or co-ops. You can also order online at www.fungi.com. In Stamets' The Mushroom Cultivator, he instructs to use quart jars, putting in 1 cup of rye grain and 2/3 to 3/4 cup of water. Let it cool and then inoculate.
