if it's only 1 jar it's a contam.. i think that guy thought you were referring to the fungus-y smell which should be coming from all the jars..
ps.. if you do know it is for sure contaminated, you might wanna stop sniffing it all the time. unless you enjoy growing live cultures in your lungs heh

take a kitchen mushroom.. the button kind, and smell it.. if this is what yur jar smells like, then the stink is most likely the mycelium. and ya it smells good, but i dunno if it smells like purdy gurls

Is it greasy in appearance? Usually fruity smells are associated with bacterial contamination.

If it's a grape type of fruity smell, you could have Pseudomonas aeruginosa running through the substrate [bacteria]. It might not be very strong, but the odor is pretty distinct compared to other bacteria.

I raise the Titanic, hell I'm barely older than this thread. I started my first grow with spawn bags (3x1 lb bags, one went moldy another hasn't done anything after a month) noc'd with flowhood MS syringes. I moved it to a compost monotub the other day, as I have no point of reference I must ask about the smell of le mycelium. It smelled clean and wholesome, like a fresh sock but for your nose. It looked clean and free of contams, bruised light blue from any breaking up, and took a couple days shy of a month to fully colonize.
So I have to ask le community, what do y'all think myc smells like? I noticed a very slight sweetness, it reminded me of fruit loops cereal. It wasn't the forefront of the smell but rather subtle. Like how in a forest the air is so fresh it's almost sweet. What do y'all think? It only milked up on the sides where the myc was pushed against the bag but fuzzy and healthy anywhere with breathing room, so I don't believe it went bacterial.
As I said, first timer, I have no reference to base off of so apologies for putting the same questions in the rut.

Haha, and on the topic of face masks, I wore a respirator and tyvek suit into the market a few days ago due to currently having a compromised immune system. Probably overkill but you know... if you got it, may as well use it. I got some great looks though. I'm sure some old lady posted me on the next door app with some fantastic gossip.
How far I've come from, ehh what? Face mask?
next time do it with a buddy and run into the store yelling " which way did he go" n watch people panick

Thanks man, it did turn out fine, ironically I'm allergic to mold so usually it makes my nose itch from the smell (achoo). But I brought it to fruit, got some not terrible yields because of goofing and making the substrate waaay too thin but learn from mistakes.
I'll definitely start using a mask though, made 20 plates of agar, 10 left empty, noc'd the other 10. Most of the noc plates went bacterial (probably) and 9/10 of the empty ones followed in suit. Working out of a SAB, showered and went minimal in boxers, alcohol rubbed arms/hands but no gloves, figured the alcohol would be sanitary enough, I was wrong.
Great story with the bio-suit tho I was thinking of building a flow cabinet but that's too expensive for the moment, so unfortunately will likely suck it up and buy premade plates.
Lil story, had a plate I gave away back in January find it's way back to me (on its last legs, suffocated and dying of thirst) and one of my bags of rye (SHIP) never took off with growth of any kind(early noob mistake getting bags), boiled it for a second and pressure cooked it in a quart jar. Took a scalpel to the plate and dropped a wedge in, I think it's been a week and it's going at the right pace, pure white. So hopefully when I get more grain I can g2g transfer.
I'm thinking of using a raised platform in the SAB to be further from the arm holes for the next round of MS and g2g, will definitely use gloves & walk on glass the next time around.
Thanks for replying and throwing in, I appreciate it!
