...smells like dead mycelium.

Afoaf noticed when removing cakes from a 24-hour dunk/cold shock that the cakes had a funny, somewhat fruity, smell. He figured it was a bacterial bloom, and tossed 'em. He dunked his next cakes in a 1:200 bleach solution to be sure he'd kill off anything. When he removed them, they had the same smell. Does dead mycelium smell?

To my knowlege mycelium does not smell when it is dead, I don't think I have ever smelt dead mycelium.

Mycelium does have this sweet, earthy, nearly fruity smell to it though.

I'd add heavenly to that list ; ) This smell was definately not a good one. One of those unpleasant smells you can't help but sniff a few more times.

It may be some bleach residue. Maybe try rinsing it in water and then smelling?

Use peroxide instead of bleach.

Well, I thought it might be the bleach, but the same smell resulted from dunks in water, bleach, and peroxide solutions. Distinctly different from the smell of fresh mycelium....sweeter perhaps. All cakes that this was noticed on went on to flush just beautifully, so it's not hurting anything. Just curious.
