Bolete ID help?
    #4530530 - 08/13/05 03:04 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I found this bolete in a ponderosa forest in the mountains of the american southwest, where the rainy season recently hit. There are a lot of them around...

The cap is mostly round, 5.5 inches at the widest point. It is dome-shaped, about 1.75 inches deep. The top surface of the cap is whitish (like the color of agaricus from the store), and the pore surface is dull yellow. The stem is the same color as the cap, five inches long, wider at base than at top; 1.25 in at top, 2.25 in at base. Top of stem is finely netted. Flesh is white and does not bruise, nor does pore surface. Smells mushroomy, does not taste acrid, bitter, etc. (don't worry, i'm not eating the whole thing). Spores are olive green, there is no veil.

The background in the pics is not the place i found it, but actually my yard... Like I said, it was under ponderosa. There were also lots of amanitas around.

My best guess is B. barrowsii, the white king bolete (mushrooms demystified p. 529), a ponderosa loving southwestern species that fits this description. Anybody know this species?

That is Boletus barrowsii. Nice find.

Nice description, too.

Those are among the choicest of edible species.

Happy mushrooming!
