Sterilization removes nutrients. Straw is best pasturized.

If you sterilize, it will most likely contam... pasturize at 170 degrees for 1 hour, use a candy thermomitor to watch the temp, $2.99 at Kfart.

Although i've never tried to sterilize it... so I cant GAURANTEE that it is a bad thing, thats just what everyone has always said, I just assumed they werent lying.

OK, straw is naturally covered in zillions of contaminants, mostly fungal/yeast spores and bacteria. If you sterilise it completely, just about any contam that lands on it will have a chance. Whereas if it's just pasteurised, most of the contams, especially fungal spores, will be killed off, leaving a few bacteria and yeasts behind, though severely kocked back. These remaining bacts/yeasts can easily be taken over by a vigorous mushroom mycelium, but, also can compete with any new contams which might come floating along. As long as the mush myc colonises te straw fast enough, any other contams don't stand a chance. You see?
At least that's how I understand it to be.
