Wheat Straw - Did You Know?
    #899040 -

My friend uses a lot of craft straw from Gardenridge, which appears to be the same product carried at Michaels. We live in a big city, and we dont' have feed stores anywhere close, so we never really tried that route. Apparently, in my area, this stuff is seasonal. The best quality is available right about....NOW. It was described to me as "beautiful" and "waxy". I have 2 bails being held for her. Okay, $15.00 a bail might be pricey, but when compared with low quality craft straw....$15.00 for 75 pounds is great. Planning on taking hedge trimmer to it, bagging it up and storing in a shed out back. Is there anything I should know about storing it?
Those of you in the cities who haven't really pursued good straw, now's the time to consider it. Worth a drive if you can get enough to last a while at a good price.

So long as you keep it DRY. Wheat straw will store for at least over the winter. If it gets damp -- it will get mold. Which isnt good.

Trimming wheat straw is a PITA (unless you have a "shredder"}.

But.................

If you have tight bound bales? It is also simple to use a circular skill saw & any kind of a truck type cargo strap (that will tighten around a bale). Simply tighten the strap - TIGHT -- around the bale -- leaving 3 or 4 inches sticking out.

Then use the skill saw to trim off what is sticking out. Then, move strap back another 3 or 4 inchs & repeat.

I like to store it in sleeves in a dry place (under 50% rh)
After cutting the bailing wire, just separate the sleeves and lay 'em out like fallen domiinos.

To break it up, I just use the lawn mower and auto-bag it. Sometimes twice.

$15 per bail is highway robbery! Should be 4-$5 per bail.

$15.00 a bail is robbery!!

I hope they are giving some of the profit to " Farm Aid "!!!!

If I used the stuff.... I think I'd use a gas powered hedge trimmer.

The more I hear about how hard these big bails are to deal with, the more I see my bf mowing wheat in the driveway. Sounds like a "big daddy" job to me. Not sure how I'll explain it to the neighbors. Guess I'll just tell them it's yard work....they'll probably throw a party, since my yard really sucks.

Do you think some of the big dessicant bags (like used to dry & store shrooms with) thrown in the chopped up bags of straw will keep them dry enough? The shed is watertight, but it's not temp controlled. I don't have enough room to store them in the house, no matter how small I cut it up. I'm thinking 150 pounds will last a year at least....

Just keep it dry
It`s really dry as it is, it`s not just going to dry out.
If you`re worried take your bail for a walk and leave it in the garden on a hot day.
Some people really worry about trivial things sometime.
You should rather be more concerned with contamination and your grow methods than worrying about your straw becoming mouldy.
Myabe it`s easier for e to get straw but still even when I can`t get it I don`t run around like a chicken without a head.
