Sphagnum Peat Moss Casing ?
    #4476640 - 07/31/05 10:10 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I was reading the Sphagnum Peat Moss casing technique and it says to just pack it around the cakes. My understanding was that I was supposed to pack it on top of the broken up mycelium. What's the correct way to use this moss and if used with h/poo and straw spawn can it be used alone; just packed on top of the colonized hpoo?

And if I don't use poo I've read that you don't need verm on the bottom, just the broken up cake. I hope I figure this out soon, my cakes only have a little bit to go before I can birth em':)

casing it you would crumble the cakes and then lightly (not pack) add it on top. better yet if you added verm with it. 50/50 verm/peat moss.
if you are going to spawn your cakes to poo, crumble or grate the cakes into the poo, mix well and then let colonize for 4-5 days and check, make sure it is 100%. then add the casing layer.

Once I mix up the casing how should I sterilize it? Does it need to be sterilized? Should I do this while the cakes are ready to be birthed so it's cooled when I'm ready to case them?

you can sterilize it in the micro like that. i myself pasturize it when i do some poo but either way will work. hell i think there are quite a few that don't do either.
good luck

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll use a moist verm layer in the bottom, then a 50/50 verm and shagnum peat moss on top. Do I need water in the top layer or not? If I do should I add it and strain it or should I just spray it?

yes you need it to bet moist. field capacity. add water until you can just squeeze a drop or two out of it.
after it is applied i also mist it to give just a little more to it.

A peat based casing layer may require some ph buffering.

If you were talking about this tek, http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7929, it is not a casing tek. It just allows the myc from cakes to creep up on the peat thus supplying the cake with much more water than normal. I've never got around to trying this myself cuz I don't do cakes anymore, but I bet it works swell.
