Question about 24/hr lighting
    #4480484 - 08/01/05 12:27 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I haven't read anything about this, and I am wondering if maybe someone can answer my question.

I gave my friend 4 PF cakes in jars, ready to be placed in his terrarium. He is using perlite for humidification, and his readings are at 99% humidity and a temp range from 76.6-78.5 F.
I didn't hear from him for a while, so I figured everything went well. He called me last night to tell me that his cakes has started pinning, but all the pins stopped, and haven't gotten any bigger (2 weeks since birth). So I asked him if his H, and Temp were in the right perimeters. He said they were, so I asked him what kind of lighting cycle he was using. He said "Cycle? I just leave my UV light on em 24 hrs/day".

My question is, would that have anything to do with photosynthesis? Like, did the cakes over photosynthesize(sp?) and go to a dormant state? Are the cakes still good if he switches to a 12/12?

I really appreciate any help.

I use an opaque terrarium for my experiments. Now I don't use cakes (I have casings), but my light cycle is just from the ambient light that develops from an open window in my room. There is a 8 X 10in hole in the lid to my Rubbermaid bin with plastic wrap taped over it. That seems to let in just enough light. My largest flush yielded an ounce and a half dry in about three days. That time there were four dollar store aluminum (~8X12in) lasagna trays holding my substrate and casings in two bins.

Fungi don't photosynthesize. 24 hours of light should be fine. If they all aborted, pick them, dunk the cakes, and start again. Good luck

Are you TheKeeper? Lol. You picked a bad name for this board silly.

oh and tell him to get that cancer causing light off his cakes. Everyone knows that the suns UV rays give you cancer so why would you expose your mushrooms to that kind of genetic breakdown. And 24 hours a day. A flouresnt light will do just fine

oh and this should be in mush cult, as there is nothing advanced about this

how is the air exchange? that could be a factor.did you dunk? the typical light cycle is 12/12 untill pins then 6/18, on/off. but i think it was scat that did it with 24 hrs of light with no bad side effects. i would bet its either dry cakes from no dunking or poor circulation as mentioned
and as subgen said the keeper is a person who runs a web site that overprices spores and makes up false names, i think he charges like $90 for a syringe, so now you can see why its a bad name.
