24 hrs of Light?
    #532439 - 01/26/02 09:23 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

I normally go 12-12 with the light for my mushies. However my roomates project currently requires 24 hours of constant light for growth, which will be in the same container as my mushies. Will this extra 12 hours of light have adverse affects on my cakes in the humidity dome?

i wouldnt think so, unless the light source is close enough to generate more heat in the terrarium.

Light only lets the little mushrooms know which way is up...

Mushrooms grow in jars I found out. I found some misplaced cambodians and they were growing in the gap between the cake and jar sides. I pulled the cake out and picked off those mushrooms and decided to try birth the cakes for the hell of it.

oh, i thought you were talking about cakes birthed already. Yes too much light can cause premature invitro pinning.

So what if you get invitro pinning? Thats the goal anyway. You should get a nice even full first flush out of a cake if you let it mature in the jar and pin invitro just prior to birth. They won't really pin until the food supply in the jar is exhausted. I don't think 24hr light will hurt one bit.

What type of light do you use for this anyway?
I have a 2x4x6' terrarium. i was thinking of running a string of christmas lights up the middle? do you think that would work? or should i just have a single light in the top of it, (like a 40w incadescent bulb) and run it for like an houir or something?
thanks
