diamonds are NOT rare. They are one of the most plentiful gems in the world, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to find them. What happens is de beers monopolizes the diamond market, since they're headquartered out of the UK they can get away with it. They own pretty much 85-90% of the diamond mines in operation, restrict the flow of the diamonds to the market, and use clever advertising to make the diamonds appear more valuable then they are (diamonds are forever ring a bell?).

It's actually sickening to learn what de beers has done over the years, lots of blood money in diamond mining. They did everything possible to corner the market and were quite successfull at it too. There was a 60 min report on this a while back, watched it in my sociology class last year. Do some searching on google about de beers you'll come up with interesting shit.

If you read Huxley's Doors of Perception, he makes some interesting observations about the sparkly nature of his vision of the world, and how everything looks like gems and precious stones, almost as if we are naturally predisposed to think that such textures and refractions of light are aesthetically pleasing, we're hardwired too...hence our fascination with the stars as well. Finding precious metals in the earth is like digging for supernovas.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Reason to me why diamonds are valuable is because they hold a tradition of gifts for people, they are a hard endurable stone, they are shiney and eye-attracting, symbolizes wealth and they are one of the beautiful things the Earth creates that people appreciate.

I'm glad we have gold and diamonds. Its pretty stuff. Plus countries in the old ages would value their country's worth on how much gold they held. Its one of the reasons why America was discovered.

PuZuZu, if you read about diamonds, you will find the De Beers is completely responsible for manufacturering the tradition.

DeBeers advertising:

....they'll know you REALLY love them when you spend your paychecks from the last 5 years on a rock that sparkles. Because you and her both know, your words and actions to show your love for her can only go so far.......

....solidify and bring meaning to your worthless relationship with cool shiny things that last a long time!

I don't know man, I think it's fucked up; through out history humans have put wayyy more value on gold (a shiny yellowish chunk of metal) and diamonds (shiny clear stone) as well as other "precious" metals and stones than they put on life. It's ridiculous and pathetic....humans are fucked up in the dome.
