Color

A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond is perfectly transparent with no hue, or color. However, in reality almost no gem-sized natural diamonds are absolutely perfect. The color of a diamond may be affected by chemical impurities and/or structural defects in the crystal lattice. Depending on the hue and intensity of a diamond's coloration, a diamond's color can either detract from or enhance its value. For example, most white diamonds are discounted in price as more yellow hue is detectable, while intense pink or blue diamonds (such as the Hope Diamond) can be dramatically more valuable. The Aurora Diamond Collection displays a spectacular array of naturally colored diamonds, and is a good source of information on the topic of colored diamonds.

Most diamonds used as gemstones are basically transparent with little tint, or white diamonds. The most common impurity, nitrogen, replaces a small proportion of carbon atoms in a diamond's structure and causes a yellowish to brownish tint. This effect is present in almost all white diamonds; in only the rarest diamonds is the coloration due to this effect undetectable. The GIA has developed a rating system for color in white diamonds, from "D" to "Z" (with D being "colorless" and Z having a bright yellow coloration), which has been widely adopted in the industry and is universally recognized, superseding several older systems once used in different countries. The GIA system uses a benchmark set of natural diamonds of known color grade, along with standardized and carefully controlled lighting conditions. Precision-crafted cubic zirconia master sets are sometimes used in the trade, however the GIA has found these sets to be inaccurate.[citation needed] Diamonds with higher color grades are rarer, in higher demand, and therefore more expensive, than lower color grades. Oddly enough, diamonds graded Z are also rare, and the bright yellow color is also highly valued. Diamonds graded D-F are considered "colorless", G-J are considered "near-colorless", K-M are "slightly colored". N-Y usually appear light yellow or brown.

In contrast to yellow or brown hues, diamonds of other colors are more rare and valuable. While even a pale pink or blue hue may increase the value of a diamond, more intense coloration is usually considered more desirable and commands the highest prices. A variety of impurities and structural imperfections cause different colors in diamonds, including yellow, pink, blue, red, green, brown, and other hues. Diamonds with unusual or intense coloration are sometimes labeled "fancy" by the diamond industry. Intense yellow coloration is considered one of the fancy colors, and is separate from the color grades of white diamonds. Gemologists have developed rating systems for fancy colored diamonds, but they are not in common use because of the relative rarity of colored diamonds.

Diamonds cant be impure if their composition is just Carbon. A bunch of atoms that are completely the same squashed together with extreme heat and pressure by man. This is how we create fake diamonds, and i know that we grow rubies to use in lasers. Or at least the inferior lasers of the past. If a ruby and a Sapphire can be grown, and they both have the same chemical composition then there must be a way that we alter the color some how. I know we can grow diamonds, or cubic zirconia in many different colors, white, orange, green, blue, etc.

speaking of dissolving gold.....

out here in nevada, they do it a different way, when they have lots of ore with very little gold content they make what is called a leech or leach pad.

they take all of the ore (aka tailings) and put it in a large cylinder, and slowly drip a liquid cyanide mixture over it, Cyanide actually disolves gold....

they are re-processling 40 million dollars worth of gold in old tailings.

but you see the problem is, often times they arent all that ecologicel and the 80 mil plastic sheet lining they have under the pad, breaks... and contaminates the fuck out of the ground and ground water.

im within 50 miles of the 3 biggest polluting gold mies in the country... its a big big problem.

I have placer rights on about 600 acres a few miles from a gold mine... i was out there today and saw quite  a bit of quartz... i think im going to start another thread on finding gold.

OK i guess that my book shows the composition of diamonds to be just Carbon, but i guess that would be in perfect world. It is strange that less pure diamonds are actually worth more then pure. However it says that almost no diamonds are perfect. Does this mean that almost all diamonds are not completely made up of solely of Carbon? I would think that if perfect diamonds were that rare then they would be worth as much as some of the colored diamonds that are just as rare. However maybe people are just infatuated with cosmetics and pretty colors.

Exactly: jewelry isn't a science but an art and craft.

Diamonds that are slightly blue will sparkle whiter when cut than pure diamonds, and diamonds with a dash of yellow look off.

Yup, there is nothing pure in mother nature, and even science isn't able to reach 100% purity with substantial amounts of anything.

Impurities in diamonds will reveal to any good jeweler whether the diamond is synthetic or natural, and if he really studies the diamond with some equipment he can make a fair prediction where the diamond was found, as certain locations are associated with certain impurities.

In a couple of centuries synthetic diamonds probably will become a construction material, for instance as an additive for extraterrestrial concrete mixes used to make space colonies.

I was talking to a friend of mine and he says that exposure to radiation could have something to do with the color change. However the rock does give not give off radiation he says it shows that it was exposed to it to some degree at some point in time. Is this not true?

I think it has more to do with oxidizing with other metals.

So if rubies and sapphires are different colors because of impurities or oxidization with other metals then how come they claim to have the same chemical composition? AL2 03. Don't the same impurities occur in the same colored gems?

The chemical formula is for the molecules that make up part of the crystal. A crystal is something else entirely from simple molecules.

A crystal consists mostly of one atom or molecule, with a tiny bit (one in a billion?) of impurities added. It is most often the case that the primary molecule that the crystal is made from determines things like the shape of the crystal, while the impurities determine the crystal's color.

OK that makes a lot more sense. So if impurities are not chemically bonded with the gems primary molecular makeup, then the impurities are just kind of sandwiched in there with everything else? So can different impurities produce the same colored gem?

Yes the impurities are just kinda sandwiched in there!

I guess two different impurities could produce the same color, but it isn't likely to be exactly the same color...there's infinite different frequencies to chose from

Not really.

A gold alloy is just a mixture though, it's pure gold mixed in with other metals, it's not chemically bonded though, so the gold is just gold.

Wrong.
Gold found in nature is far from pure.
Even nuggets found in placers, seldom run more than 825 fine.
Yes, gold is in some cases (complex sulfides for example) is chemically bonded with and/or to other minerals.

That is why it takes sophisticated metallurgy, to break those bonds.
To recover gold that is not free milling.
