well some bad things could happen when pcing but you should get used to it pretty quick considering how often youll be doing it.

I was scared of using a pressure cooker when I first started too.

Now I don't even blink an eye!~

You will get more comfortable with pc'ing...with time.

I don't use PC, I boil the jars for 1h15' - 1h30' and I get no contaminations if the jars are fully covered by the cooker.

the best way to get use to it is use it more,make crop after crop of shrooms, start canning your own fruit, I have a friend with a peach tree, and he hates peaches so I go pick them and can a dozen jars a summer, yum.

heh I was thinking of canning pickled (fresh) cubensis in vinegar and then using them in recepies and salads.

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work?

Yeah when my PC was going I would never work in line of sight of the PC; I would always be in another room. I trust it more now (after all it hasn't blown up yet) but I know where you're coming from myCo_psyCo

I thought of something else.. Wouldn't the vinegar itself prevent contaminations? Maybe the whole thing could be done without PCing, or maybe like 5 minutes at 5 psi just to seal the jars up..

You know it!!

If I do it I'll make it like 30 wet grams per jar and then add all that other stuff. The vinegar will need to be consumed too, I'm sure it will extract much of the alkaloids out of the mushrooms.

Then it stands to reason that the entire contents of the jar would become psychoactive, not just the mushrooms, but the other veggies as well.

hmmmm add mushrooms, vinegar and cucumbers and make trip pickles!!

O.K. We need to get back on topic before this gets moved to the Culinary Forum. This is about hating PC'ing. Which, I myself also did and was a little scaried.

Try this.

Everytime I would hear that annoying hissing, my hubby and I would have sex. You know, on the living room floor. On the dinig room table. Bent over the couch, you know, whatever. Soon you will be over your fear of PC'ing. Everytime I PC now, he comes running drooling,lol. I've nicknamed him "Pavlov",LMAO. :grin:

UM,maybe that's why he bought me 3 greenhouses, 5 dozen quart jars and 100 pounds of WBS, said it was on sale. :confused: Oh well.

I bought a little 4 quart stainless Presto to keep the kitchen heat down, I run the big 22 qt. monsters in the winter. The presto rocks. Let it blow for 5 min. (you should let a pc blow for at least 5 min before putting on the weight, gets the air out!) Stick the weight on, go watch TV. The big ones need watching to keep it at 15 lbs. If anything goes wrong, the rubber plug pops out (like a bullet) and even though you make a huge mess by all the contents of the bottles spraying out the hole, nothing really happens. If ya don't have the rubber plug, time for a newer unit! (HippyChick must not have any kids wandering the house asking questions!) Presto stainless units probably can stand 8 times rated pressure, I suspect. I could ask if you want!

dude..

First of all presto 4 quarts only go to 10 psi (unless you modded it).

Second, you never want the rubber safety plug popping out, if it does, you're fucking up bigtime.

You don't just go watch TV and let the thing blow up in the kitchen dude.

All Prestos with the single weight go to 15 lbs. New prestos just out will go from 7, 12, and somewhat over 15. I called the Presto Corp. to verify. All the Mirro's under 8 qts. go to 10 lbs, I called the company, again, to varify, and have it in writing from both companys. As pressure cookers can be misused, I go the extra mile of verification as some Dude may read this and actually do it. I do PC runs all winter, some as long as 3 hrs, what am I supposed to do with all that time, sit there and be frightened?

Well, maybe I'm wrong about the prestos going to 10.

I would set an alarm to go off in an hour, make sure there is ample water in it, and keep the heat to around medium low after it starts rocking. Do that and the safety thing should never blow.

Yes, I agree. With the larger units, ya gotta sit there, one eye on the Gage, adjusting the gas. With the small rocker types, which go through a lot more water, they still need to be watched. I set mine on the lowest gas setting I can. They warn about running out of water, usually melts the pot! I never actually leave the room while the gas is on. Both mirros and Prestos have a lid interlock which keeps pressure from building if something is wrong. I like the Presto design better.
If you blow the rubber plug, somethings wrong. It is just not all that bad. It can happen if the steam pipe on the rocker gets clogged.
Once we blew up a 30 gal. drum of Nitro, as an investigative test, and it took 3 minutes for the blast doors off the bunker to land. We were miles away with a robot controlled fork lift and it rained stuff for hours! The sound was unbelievable! That was a blast.
