Birdseed, After the PC'ing

I know that once the PC'ing is done on the birdseed, you need to shake the jars to keep the seed from clumping... I also heard that once the jars cool it creates a vaccum and sucks in air into the jars...

I am using filterdisks... so should I wait until the jars have completely cooled before shaking? Or should I shake them right after they are done PC'ing? Wouldnt the filterdisk eliminate the risk of contams if infact it does create a vaccum when cooling?

yeah you should shake them. just try to avoid touching the actual disk (you should have foil over it from PCing so just leave that on there). also avoid shaking the birdseed into the disk because water and contams can transfer

Wait until the PC has gone ack to 0 psi. Spray the area liberaly with lysol, and let it settle. Open the PC, and using a sterile/clean cloth (to hold the hot jars), shake the grain in the jars. You might have to strike them with the palm of your hand if they're really clumped together. Place them back in the PC and let them fully cool before innoculating. This works well for me. I hope that helps.

Cool, sounds great I am using the plastic lids from sporeworks.com and have drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the center for gas exchange, and then a very small hole near the edge of the plastic lid, for innoculation that I can later tape up, but still have the hole for gas exchange... that way, I still have a sturdy lid and still can use filterdisks without the worrys of touching them. When i get my digi camera working again... ill post the pictures. Thanks!

Simple,
Let the jars cool down in the PC.

If you open the PC before it has cooled, the high temperature in the PC will cause a vacuum effect and draw in air. If you let it cool, you won't get this vacuum and you'll be fine.

As for shaking the jars. Shake until you hearts content:)

Don't worry about hitting the birdseed against the filter disc. The filter disc is there to prevent contaminates. If your birdseed touches the filter discs it won't come in contact with any contams (hence the entire reason you have filter discs).

The clumping that you'll see is no big deal. Just shake your jars, inoculate, then shake again. If you need anything else, feel free to PM me

Ahhh! Perfect! Thank you for the answers... hopefully once the PC is opened I will see jars without a mass of exploded kernels Very good info about the vaccum... thanks again!

I cooked some Birdseed up, and it turned out really well, very few kernals exploded. My problem is that I didn't shake it up after PC'ing.. I innoculated.. and after waiting a few days and seeing no growth I shook them up. Now I'm pretty sure I see a bit of white growth in one of the jars.. my question is should I re-innoculate the others? Or will the spores inside the jar still be viable?

For what its worth, I would just make new jars. Get more birdseed and simply resterilize your jars. Its not worth the contam problems you'd problem get.

Thanks for all the information everyone... 3 out of 4 experimental quart jars turned out great. *VERY* few exploded kernels... The 4th jar was just way too full to shake, due to me messing with how much seed I could fit into the jars... but one turned out exactly perfect, the maximum amount of seed with the needed space to shake (so I hope... will see after innoculation), I dont have the specifications on hand, but I believe I filled with seed until the 400ml mark on the quart jar... i will get the exact numbers tonight or tomorrow... depending if i make it home.

on the water ratio... I just got out another jar and poured in 2/3 of birdseed and then 1/3 of water, after that you can eyeball what the waterlevel will need to be for the seed:water ratio no matter the ammount of seed. maby a centimeter of water above the seed? im just guessing... like i said, i will get the numbers.

of course, i rinsed the jars about three times to get all the kote crap off of the penningtons seed, then just loaded it and pressure cooked it... I am impatient, so I couldnt wait for the overnight soak... However, I also have some soaking overnight as well... I will let you know which ones work out better.

What I did was boil some water, then I added the birdseed, stired it around a bit.. microwaved it for like a minute or two.. then loaded up the jars and PC'd.

I'm also lazy.
