mite-like insect invasion
    #439952 - 10/28/01 11:00 PM (23 years, 9 days ago)

when i first grew i tried to grow on unsterilized cow manure. But mite like bugs were contained in the sample i was using that i was unaware of at the time. i stopped using manure and started the cake method and then the casing method with potting soil which i have liked the best by far. but the flying mite like bugs returned mysteriously. i stopped doing casings and had no casings for a couple weeks hoping they would go away without dirt to feed on (their only food supply seemingly) i started doing more casings and i noticed those bugs returned. i just see a couple at a time now but i need to get rid of them.

what do i do????

describe the mites in detail.
are you growing indoors or out?
make sure you pasturize your casing material for 2 hours at 140*F.
until then, a temporary "guess"of a quik fix...
buy a "citronella"(sp?) candle from walmart. its used to keep flying insects away or some shit...

Spray the inside of your terrarium lid very lightly with Raid.

Very lightly, not so it's dripping down the walls or onto cakes or casings. The insecticides available to the public are all relatively safe.
