People buy airplane kits all the time and learn how to fly them on their own.

Doesn't mean that their ability to fly is impaired or flawed.

They just took a different path to get where they are in their flying abilities.

When you know why you are conducting a ritual and it has shown itself to be useful, it is not dogma. When you forget why you do the ritual, but do it anyway based on an unfounded opinion...it is dogma.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

This analogy has gone a little bit off balance. What if its somebody elses plane, and in order to fly it, not only do you need instructions, but you also need to be given the correct key for the ignition. Without such a key, all instructions are useless. Is this a dogmatic view? Is it dogmatic to say that you need the key to fly the aeroplane? This analogy is closer to what i mean by "initiation".

toothbrushing is a ritual
based upon a kind of dogma that grows into knowledge as you question it.
after questioning, it flowers into understanding about plaque, bacteria, cavities, gum disease, and hygeine - branching into nutrition and a discussion of methods.
soon you become a dentist or just a toothbrusher, but you can ask and go deeper and deeper.
so
I would not call the ritual of toothbrushing itself a dogma, nor a persistently dogma based routine. it may start as "brush your teeth johnny" when you are too young to know better. but it shifts nicely into knowledge and mindful practice.

I agree. Ritual and religion are also not always dogmatic.

but the ritual is not the dogma ever.

the link here is goofy

rituals may be based upon clarity
or upon dogma
or just habituated into a rituals
by accidents of circumstance.
