Improv'ing sad music

I havent been learning any new classical pieces recently, as I have frankly just been too lazy. So mostly I just improv, as I find it to be pretty fun. But I have noticed that when I improv, everything I play is usually in a minor key. It is far easier to play sad music I find, then to try and play something upbeat. Even when I am soloing in C, it just sounds like Am, and in fact I have a hard time making it sound like C. Any help with that? Maybe I should emphasize the C notes or something? I never took much music theory.

so what scales are you using? maybe try the major scale :wink:

Well soloing in e minor is quite easy. But when I try to solo in say C major, it sounds like A minor. I realize they have the same notes, but I cant ever make it sound happy. Sometimes with other major keys I can pull it off, I find it also depends on tempo, but it is harder.

Oh i see. I think what I am doing is while soloing in the lower numbered strings (higher ocatve), I will throw in a bass line in the higher strings, which usually comes off as sad. But I changed it to more of a funky and steady bass line, instead of just bass notes thrown in for a sustain effect.

A major scale can sound like any diatonic scale (including minor) It's all how you play it. (what notes you start and end on and the chords below it)

practice :shrug:

The more connections you make between your brain and your fingers, and the more you learn about the instrument, the more effectively you'll be able to translate your feelings into musical phrases.

record yourself playing. identify the 5 licks you play most often. dont play those. alot of people use standard licks as a crutch.

transcribe solos you think are upbeat and find how they work over the changes. one of the main things you are looking for are the notes that runs start and stop on.

embrace chromatics.

i used to have the same problem. i got passed it by developing my playing enough to play a solo pretty close to the one i'm narrating in my head before i actually play it. know what i mean..

but it also involves what notes you end a phrase on, or base a phrase around. if you're playing a solo in C, yea the scale is the same shape as it would be in Am. but instead of using A as the root note, you should be using C or any other note of a C major chord.

i know it feels the same, but you have to mentally change the way you're using that scale or mode or whatever.

Thanks, thats all good advice.
One of my problems also, is that I try to solo while trying to sustain multiple voices. Realistically I am not up to that level yet.
