How do I improve?
    #3172731 - 09/24/04 12:25 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I'm taking drum lessons now and they're really fun and I'm learning stuff so that's all well and good. But I want to improve my skills as a bassist and guitarist and I'm not sure how. Any suggestions?

Practice is your best bet, man.
Brush up on your theory and improv.
Learn new techniques.
Learn an entire album.
Attempt songs that you think would be out of your league.

Just outta curiosity, what kind of music do you like playing?

listen to killer guitarists that you really enjoy and figure out what distinguishes them from those who suck. Then attempt to take it a step further with your own work.

I mean naturally this is "easier said than done" but honestly dude just keep playing, ESPECIALLY KEEP PLAYING WHEN YOU FUCK UP!! Go with your mistakes and you will learn incredible things

I listen to all kinds of shit from Tool, to Distillers, to Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Green Day, to System of a Down. Even Beastie Boys.

How do I learn theory and new techniques?

get some sort of electronic metronome, so you can try new time signatures and tempos (i notice you listen to Tool).

listen to tons of good music and try to at least keep a beat that goes along with it, that's what i did when i was practicing drums a few months ago. i'm mainly a guitarist at heart.

"How do I learn theory"

How does one learn anything? Research or schooling, my friend - its as simple as that..

"and new techniques?"

Well you can't really "learn" new techniques because once they're being taught they're not really "new." The newest techniques will come from your mind or random concerts by killer young artists

Go slow.

Suppose you want to try and learn a new song at quarter note = 100. Start practicing the song at quarter note = 40 and count.

Subdivide as much far as makes sense (to eighth or sixtenth notes), and count. Practice slow. With a metronome. Then speed up a little bit. Then a little bit more. Never stop counting. It may seem very tedious, but 4 hours practicing like this will take you farther then 8 playing and messing up. One of the things you will notice is that the people who are really good have killer timing that only comes with constant counting and subdivision and awareness of the beat.

Practice scales and arpeggios in different keys, slow at first, then faster. Keep the beat.

Nothing beats (no pun intended) practice at a slower tempo.

Jokes aside, percussion is a great way to improve on other instruments, because your timing will improve, which is a huge part of music.

If yer talking about drums, i seriusly get a sheet of rudiments and get them down pretty good. So you get get with sticking and then attack the set.

Percussion is my only istrument. I play tenor drums the best, 6 of em. I can not read notes but i can tune my 6 tenor drums and play them based on the lines and shit haha. im drunk
