Liberal is a four-letter word?

I don't want to draw lines, but I have no idea why there is such a stigma around the word liberal in the US. Can anyone fill me in?

There is no "stigma". Some people are liberal some are not. Some hate liberals some dont.

Im sure its the same for any political party/ideology anywhere.

Well part of it is pure demagogury, that came into being due to the plan of the right, in the early 70's, but wasn't effective untill talk radio. You are seeing the payoff from 30 years, and hundreds of millions of dollars. But part of it also is, from lovers of liberty like myself, liberals are a weak bunch, political cowards. In fact there is still a blame nader sentiment going on now, the liberals in America aren't even worthy of power. They are just as bad as the right, however simply aren't tyrannical in the name of God, or tradition. Liberals brought it upon themselves, and it is an ideology that lends itself to apathy and mockery.

If we are talking the american liberal, that is a misperception, tehy are the compassionate, nice-guys. There is a strong strand of racism with liberalism (even going back to Martin Luther king, and their opposition to him in birmingham). There is much condescenion too. Liberals tend to be affluent, or isolated in some sense (hollywood, rich kids). Which is why they back disasterous policies like gun control and the drug war, and look at how they viciously savaged nader, and liberal politicians backed the war in iraq.

The word simply has no bad meaning in these parts, in fact, i'd say a majority of canadians would recognise it as a good one. in fact, the governing party in Canada is the Liberal Party.

I wish there were a good book on this explaining the roots.
