need Gymnopilus viridans pictures
    #4344982 - 06/27/05 11:17 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Alright, Gymnopilus viridans is listed as an active shroom, the location matches some places I've got to look and there is a good possibility that I've got some (if i'm lucky  ) but unfortunately I haven't been able to find a picture or a suitable description ANYWHERE, I've looked all over the place on this site and on the internet and everything but I've found nothing.

I was wondering if anybody out there hunts these at all or at least knows where I can find some information on them (a picture is necessary). Thanks, you guys have been so damn helpful so far... I wonder if you can do this.

The location is southern ontario in case you were curious.

I just searched also with no luck, but since you're in southern ontario you could also look up gym luteofolius and there's a couple others that I can't remember now but most likely grow there.

Is this luteofolius mushroom active? If it is active and is found in southern ontario then the list of shrooms under the ontario section of the FAQ (which shrooms grow in my location) is not very comprehensive at all... I've increased my list by like 4 kinds since I started researching, they should add these to the FAQ.

Psilocybe silvatica
Panaeolus subbalteatus
Gymnopilus viridans
Amanita muscaria
Gymnopilus spectabilis
Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe coprophila
Psilocybe semilanceata
Panaeolus castaneifolius

somebody also said cubes, but I'm not sure about that.

Gymnopilus luteofolius grows here in Michigan so I assumed it would grow in southern ontario. You definetly don't wanna be lookin for cubes, you're way too far north unless you're lookin inside :whistling: . Also, i believe psilocybe coprophila is an inactive psilocybe but im not sure on that. Mainly though you wanna be lookin for panaeolus subbalteatus or possibly gyms.

I've looked for and found subbs as well as alot of curious mushrooms which were more interesting than psychoactive.

I've got no information on gyms so I cant very well look for and find them can I?

i know someone kinda didnt like it when i said this, because there are mushrooms missing from this literature, but you might check out the Audobon Society: Mushrooms of North America. Its a little brown book. You might be able to find it at your local library, but maybe not. Good luck. Libraries seem to have a lot of reading for shrooms, where I live.

yes, as psiclops said go out and get The National Audubon Society Field Guide To North American Mushrooms (not the pocket guide). from what research ive done online Psilocybe Coprophila is inactive, however i have two friends who have eaten them and reported them as active (they are experienced shroomers so im quite sure it wasnt a placebo) and the field guide i have (the one listed above) lists them as active.

Alright, thank you. Are luteofolius and viridans the same mushroom?

There are alot of species names that are synonyms, why is this? Do the names have specific meaning (I can just about hear somebody directing me to the FAQ already) and as they're reclassified they have to be renamed? Regardless... its annoying and probably causes some miscommunications from people who dont actually dont know the synonyms.

Anyways, I'm not sure whether they're the same and I found some that resemble gymnopilus, just in their shape, they're not luteofolius because they're orange... but they could be viridans if viridans aren't luteofolius. heh There are 3 or 4 very closely growing clusters of them within a space of about 3 or 4 sq meters. They are undoubtedly the same species, all of the big ones look like that because they're at the end of their life cycle but a few days before i took this picture they were very strong and healthy looking, even hard to take a sample from. But now the only choices i've got are immature, or overmature... enjoy. There seem to be little white specks of something in the gills of the older one. I tried to get a spore print but nothing showed up after several hours (white on white paper?? no idea)

oooh that's right, I've got it in my little "notepad" list of shrooms with my research.
They'll likely be hard to find and dont they grow in the fall?

I don't believe so, gymnopilus luteofolius Grows in the south and gymnopilus viridans is more north as a generalization,
Take care
