Partial Premature Cake Birth
    #434015 - 10/23/01 09:23 AM (22 years, 11 months ago)

I want to know what anybody thinks of this. A 1/2 pint PF cake (in jar), 90% colonized, was inverted to release CO2. Everything was normal. But then, as the tape was removed, the vacuum seal was released, and the cake slid down a 1/2 inch to an inch, crushing the dry vermiculite layer. Should it be left or placed back upright? With less of a vermiculite barrier, should the tape be replaced?

Leave it upside down. The air above will help the bottom colonise. If any contams are to get in, they came in when you removed the tape. The tape should have been removed of loosened before the jar was so fully colonised. Growing mycelium needs air exchange.

At what point do you suggest removing the tape...and do you always turn them upside down. What about contams? I don't have any disks yet for the jars, so only lids w/holes???????

I'd wait until the jars are at least 50% colonized before loosening tape and flipping over.
