u need to be nicer. the way ur first post is written it seems like u intended to say u just bought a random bag at walmart and were surpised to see it didnt contain what u needed. i have never heard of jiffy mix, i was pretty much just asking for clarification of what u had actually done because i assumed you werent such a bonehead as to just pick up a random bag of something and use it. I wish you would have explained ur problem a little more in depth instead of bitching about not getting ur answers quick enough. just go buy a damn bag of vermiculite for 2.79 if ur unsure about the happy mix.

I am not a mean person and i was not bitching about getting anwsers fast enough.i assumed that jiffy mix would be jiffy mix.got it home it has perlite in it not verm. I understand i could use plain verm but if jiffy mix is better then why use verm.

Jiffyproducts.com says "Jiffy Mix?
Professional quality mix of peat moss and vermiculite is ideal for starting seeds and rooting cuttings." but since it is perlite make sure there are NO FERTILIZERS added I know jiffy make a few products with ferts I used to use it.The perlite will work because it is made from volcanic glass it has no nutrients and will aerate the peat but I think it will dry out faster then verm so keep an eye on your casing layer I would add some crushed oystershells or eggshells from a petstore or gardenstore like agway to make sure your pH levels stays around 7 (jiffy mix comes about that)that will help keep the green mold away and help you get the most flushes possible

there is jiffy mix & jiffy mix plus that I have seen never bought the jiffy mix plus thats the one with the nutes. perlite will work it wont cause a higher contaim rate and will keep the peat from compacting(peat is too dense to use alone) just think verm is better at holding in water so you will have to spray more and try to get the top surface as even as possible if it is a course perlite

i thought that straight verm is harder to determine the water content than peat by sight, mixing in verm is not a problem but if you dont have to and get favorable results then it saves money .verm is 8.00 a bag here .jiffy mix was 3.00 and already has the lime in it.

I have used the jiffy mix with vermiculite in it and it said it had lime in it but I would still check the ph. It seems to vary sometimes.

jiffymix is a well-known material for casing. it's cheap and already mixed. if you get the kind without verm, just mix in some verm. it's a simple and easy casing solution.
