first time mushroom hunting
    #4294355 - 06/14/05 07:00 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

right, i went mushie hunting for the first time last week (sick of paying $20 every time i want to go tripping!)and as well as verifiably magik mushrooms, i found some really small dark purple mushrooms on a log along with the ones i'd already picked. does anyone know anything about really small dark purple mushies? they had a very bell shaped head.
also...what happens if you put mushrooms in the freezer without drying them first? do they retain potency?

Well without a pic, spore print, or any other useful info other than "small dark purple mushrooms" i would say find a pic of Cortinarius iodes(non-active) and compare

Inky caps are not the common name for Cortinarius, and Cortinarius do not grow out of logs.

hey man, I'm from NZ as well and I have seen a few types of little purple shrooms around the place. Some of them look similar to liberty caps in size and shape but are a browney purple. Other ones I found near some libertys that had a bright psychedelic purple cap, orange gills and a brigt nearly neon yellow stem. They looked fuckin poisonus!!

I've never bothered to properly ID the little purpleish ones, but one thing I can say for sure is they are not magic, and probably not edible either.

If you want a good website on NZ fungi, just cruise on down to http://www.hiddenforest.co.nz/fungi/index.htm and click on the different mushroom families down the left hand side to have a look.
