regarding straw: pastrurize or boil the hell out of it
    #4279013 - 06/10/05 09:54 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I know everyone suggests to pasturize straw at 160 to 180F. but it seems that when i do this i get good colonization. I then case with peat and verm continue to incubate drop the temp and then nothing. Ok not nothing i get a bad batch of the green meanies. but when i boil the hell out of the straw i contamination doesnt seem to be a problem. Anyone have similar experiences?

My experience with properly pasteurized straw has always been almost immediate trich infestation, just like you are experiencing. Never tried boiling straw, just quit using it completely.

nope!~

I have never had a problem with pastuerized straw...when I used it. <--past tense.

might have been your casing layer material...
the peat and verm ph might have been off!~
did you use any kind of buffer with it?

I don't use pastuerized straw anymore...I don't like using it.

I only use horse poo now...larger fruits, larger yeilds and more flushes!~

Must be nice to be rich and can afford Horse Poo and something other than Cardstock

The only time I ever had problems with straw was if I overcooked it, then it would contam, every time.
Pasturized properly, I never had a problem.

i used garden lime as a buffer. I disected the tray to see what i could find and it was contaminated all the way to the bottom. not much contam in the casing layer. substrate depth was 6 inches.
i just purchased a new product from canadian tire that is suppose to replace peat. Its already neutral balanced to 7ph and comes packaged like a brick of coir. plan on opening it up tonight to see what its consistancy is once water is added. Hopefully it will make for a good casing layer and i'll no longer have to use a ph buffer.

Pastuized straw will work fine. The key is to keep the temps below 175. Or use 1 cup of lime, 1cup of bleach per 12 gallons of H20 for a warm bath. Never had a prob. I like the warm bath myself.

I think Agar was the one that said...If you're over or under (in terms of temp), You'll get a bacterial bloom...

I've never had that problem to be honest, only one i've had so far is dunking it for the second flush...shit always wantes to fall apart, lol.
