New Feature: Secure Private Messages!

The admins are always looking for ways to help ensure your guys' privacy and security. We are pleased to offer a new feature which seamlessly integrates military-grade public-key encryption with our BB's private messaging interface. This new functionality will allow you to send PMs which are virtually impossible to intercept, and can only be decrypted by the intended recipient. You can enable it on your account through a quick setup process and then it's possible to exchange secure messages with any other members who also have it enabled.

We have taken many precautions to ensure the integrity of secure private messages on the Shroomery. Our system uses standard PGP encryption and SSL is utilized for all communication with the site. We never store any sensitive information on our server and temp files are securely wiped immediately after use. From a technical standpoint, encrypted private messages are significantly more secure than regular e-mail, and offer about the same amount of privacy as Hushmail and similar services. Hopefully this will come in handy when people have sensitive correspondence which they wish to keep safe.

Follow this link to enable secure private messages on your account.

Once the process is complete, you will notice an "encrypt this message" option at the bottom of new private messages. Check this box when you're contacting another member with secure PMs enabled, and your messages will be locked down with unbreakable encryption. The recipient simply has to enter their passphrase to display the original content. If they haven't enabled secure PMs yet, you'll be given the option to send the message unencrypted. It's that simple!

Please report any problems so we can get the bugs ironed out. Also feel free to ask any questions or make suggestions about the new functionality. We hope you enjoy this feature and find it useful!

Yeah without a public key encryption scheme there's not really any way to prevent that. Don't flatter yourself I promise we would never bother heh. But it also means if someone gained access to our server, like a hacker or DEA agent, they could read them too. That's why we added this functionality, so you can ensure that only the intended recipient can decrypt your PM.

I'm all for it and I've talked to Vamp about it, the problem is we'd have to change server software but it will probably happen sometime in the future.

No, the unencrypted text is never stored on the server. The recipient has to decrypt the private message every time they view it.

When someone sends you an encrypted pm you will have to enter you pass phrase to decrypt it. Thats how you will know.

i used the encrypted message feature a few times and it's awesome, but I must have missed where it said anything about a "Private Key.txt"

Ok this is all cool and everything, but I can't get it to work. Meaning I can't read my PM's or make trades. I tried putting in my chosen passcode, that didn't work. So then I tried using the PM txt file that was stored on my computer. Neither is working.

I've noticed that when you try to send an encrypted message to someone who doesn't have the feature enabled, it won't send. Instead of having to send it unencrypted, it should still be sent, and there should be a message displayed to the recipient enforming them of what they need to do to be able to read it.

YES! It's the ultimate in security, which should be everyone's priority. But, it seems that nobody is using it :confused:
Just because it has a few bugs? So does everything else.
I can't see anybody not using it, especially the old hands around here.

OK, I'm thinking there must be a bug, everytime I put in my passphrase it's not acceptec, and then when I link my key it always comes up to the "Cannot display" page.

Hmm, thanks a lot man for helping me with this, I really appreciate it!

The problem is that it's timing out when sending your private key to our server over an encrypted connection. I just tested this so it does work under some conditions, but apparently not all of them. What happens when you follow the steps contained in the error message? In IE under Help | About, it should say "Cipher Strength: 128 bit" and if you go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Security, you should have "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" selected. Is any of this not the case?

I guess I am a complete idiot !! I used the link above and It prompty me for my user name and pass word. I entered it just like I do to enter the forum and it says my information is wrong. I have pms I can't read because my passphrase is wrong. And the file that is on my computer was wrong but it doesn't even give me this option anymore so I can't even tells you what it says.

Hey,

Nothing idiotic about it, I just need to make the secure PMs work better. I'm kind of confused about why you're having this problem but hopefully I can help get it resolved. First of all, the pass phrase which you entered to set up secure private messages is not necessarily the same as your BB password. Make sure you're not getting them confused, and also be sure you're entering the passphrase exactly the same as when you set it up since it's case sensitive. Also, if you're no longer being prompted for the file on your computer (your private key) it sounds like it was loaded successfully. Why do you say it was wrong?

I can't veiw my messages. The password that your test prompts me for is the same to enter the forum not to veiw messages correct? this is what I entered. My password not passphrase. Actually I made the passphrase very basic. so I think I am entering it correctly. I was sure it was correct before but I am now second guesssing myself. What if I am entering it incorrectly? It doesn't prompt me for the key anymore but says the passphrase entered is incorrect.

I added a "forgot your passphrase" link to secure private messages. This will allow you to create a new keypair if you've forgotten your passphrase so you can continue to use secure PMs. Hope this helps!

i always use firefox, i haven't cleared my cookies and not using a different computer neither installed a different browser. Just can't find the "bOemius Private Key.txt" anywhere in my computer?! Where should it be?? I did several searches and nothing :frown:
Should i "Recreate Keypair" and thus loose the ability to read the already sent Pm's.

i've managed to find the place where it was the link to save the private key and the link to delete it from the shroomery server. I saved correctly my private key, but now i can't find again that place to delete it from the shroomery server... May i assume that after i've saved it, the private key is automatically removed from the server? Well things are working just fine and must say "small step to man, great step to mankind", thanks Ythan you're the man that make this come true

At the moment there are no known bugs with the secure PMs so I'd really like to figure out why it's not working for you. What happens when you try and view an encrypted PM? What is the output when you visit this page: http://www.shroomery.org/pubssl/testsecurepm.php ? I'd definitely like to resolve any outstanding issues so people can use secure PMs as easily as insecure ones.

I know this is old as fuck thread, but I gotta question. I recieved a secure message. I don't know what my passkey is. How do I retreive this? If I just change it, can I still receive this message? It says I already have one set up, but I don't remember doing that

You must have set it up a long time ago.  You need to make a new one.  You'll need to ask the sender to resend after you do this.

Also note that if you recreate your passkey/file pair,
you won't be able to read any of your previous secure messages.

I had an issue a few days ago in which I had to recreate my keypair.

It's a password I'd never forget and obviously meant for this place and this place only.

Did anything glitch in the system? I lost a lot of encrypted PMs after having to do the change.

Glitch in the Matrix? I can guarantee it's 100% not something I'd forget here.

You guys need to save the key locally so you can reload it from the saved file. Otherwise, you can create a new key, but you won't be able to read any old PM encrypted with the old key.

I've had to reload mine several times over the years.

But see - I was using the correct key.
Something happened that corrupted the internal record.

Oh that's weird. I've had it lose my key, but when I load it again from the backup, it works fine.

I don't mean the password, I mean the PGP key itself. It's a text file that looks like this:

I have multiple copies of the key file saved in various places.
It's the single-word password that doesn't work.

I don't think my private messages are sending.

I typed my message, had a recipient, clicked "continue" and "ok, submit" and the same window refreshes and shows my message, and has "ok, submit" at the bottom. It says nothing about if my message has been sent or not. On my account page it doesn't show that I've sent a message...

Any ideas?

The only issue i see with this that the private key is stored on your server's it should be store locally be a gov or law enforcement can seize your server's and have all the private keys, but i love the fact that shroomery admins are trying to protect their member's

It's true that it's not as secure as doing the encryption client-side, because we do temporarily need a copy of your private key to decrypt a message. However, we don't store these on the server, your browser sends us your private key over HTTPS when you want to decrypt a message. We display the message to you, also over HTTPS, then your private key and all other files related to the decryption are securely wiped from storage. Even if our servers are seized, secure PMs should remain protected by PGP-grade encryption. It's not a perfect system, but we did try to make it as safe as possible while keeping it relatively simple to use. :smile:

Well I am grateful, Also if the key are sent over HTTPS why isnt the whole site HTTPS? its seems that would make it more secure .. maybe I am wrong, anyways i love this site even tho i am new here, ill be here for a long time, hopefully i make some great friends here

We tried that but the speed of the site slowed to a crawl.  We do offer that option for supporters.
